Without plate tectonics, our planet would be very different Constant changes in the earth's crust provide us with a stable climate deposits of minerals and oil, and oceans with a life-sustaining balance of chemicals They even give rise to evolution every few hundred million years

Tectonic plates are gigantic pieces of the Earth's crust and uppermost mantle. They are made up of oceanic crust and continental crust. Earthquakes occur around mid-ocean ridges and the large faults which mark the edges of the plates.

I find it humerous that part of Japan is on the North American plate.

Almost 90% of World's volcanic eruption and earthquakes occur in the Pacific region that is called The Ring Of Fire. Because a large number of tectonic plates are present under the Earth here. That's why Japan that is in this region is suffering by Massive Earths every year.

What is tectonic plates? A tectonic plate is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. Plate size can vary greatly, from a few hundred to thousands of km across;Pacific and AntarcticPlates are among largest.

How tectonic plates are formed? Minerals in lithospheric slabs restructure as slabs descend into the mantle, releasing water and increasing the slabs' densities. The dense, downgoing slabs pull on the parts of the plates still at the surface, driving plate tectonics.

What are the benefits of the tectonic plates? We know that Earth's past internal movements of the tectonic plates under our feet make our planet one-of-a-kind — they trapped carbon dioxide which helped make our planet habitable.
