Where's the world's oldest university?
31 Yorum

Wikipedia lists Bologna as the oldest, teaching since 1088. It's entry for al-Qarawiyyin has it becoming a university only in 1963.

It’s Bologna, Italy

That's a madrasa and was only named a university in 1965. Names matter and the university is a western institution. 1088 often considered to be the date on which teaching outside of ecclesiastical schools began and that date goes to the oldest University of Bologna.

I'm afraid you're not quite right(a true rarity for you🙂)It was a Mosque/Madrassa, a religious school. The 1st evidence of wider teaching comes from the 12th century, but only became what we would recognise as a university in the 20th century(when they also let women study).

interesting. i always thought it was bologna, italy.

Bologna mate.

Not a university though. Please have a look at this relevant article by the always excellent Thony Christie. @rmathematicus

The Edinburgh answer was wild: not even the oldest in Scotland! (fourth oldest)

Fes in Morocco

Fun fact is the University of Oxford has no official founding date, they have found documentation of it as a University since 1096AD meaning that it could be even older than that

Morocco Al Karawin

A mosque is the opposite of a University
