President Trump signed an agreement on Greenland with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The document will allow the US to immediately begin expanding its military presence in Greenland, including the construction of two military bases on the island. In addition, the agreement provides for a ban on the deployment of military bases in Greenland by non-NATO countries; establishes an investment screening mechanism that will allow for the blocking of investments from China and Russia; provides the people of Greenland with the opportunity to independently choose their political future; and contains no provisions regarding the transfer of any territory to the United States. Earlier, Reuters reported that following the agreement, the US would restore a Cold War-era military base and establish another military facility in Greenland.
