Gina Gershon had read the "Assassins" (1995) script by the Wachowskis and wanted to feature in the movie, but she wasn't able to. When the script of "Bound" (1996) was sent to Gershon, her agents told her not to appear in the movie as it may end her career. Their reason was that she had just played a lesbian in "Showgirls" (1995). She replied, "I'm like, "Well, I just played a bisexual person," as we were saying in the day. I said, "That's very different. And who cares? I want to read the script just because I liked those writers." The agents also said to her that the Wachowskis were unknown and had never directed a movie before. Gershon replied, "These unknown filmmakers are geniuses. They're visionaries. They're brilliant. I want to work with them." The agents clearly told her "We can't represent you if you do this movie. We have other plans for you". So, she left the agency. On the reasons for why she needed to do the role, Gershon said, "I was anxious to show that I was a pretty serious actress. When I read "Bound", A, I had never read women's parts like this. And B, the idea of cutting off my hair, cutting off my nails, taking off 20 pounds of this makeup that I've been wearing for months and months… it was 180 degrees from what I had just played. Alex Proyas on the Commercial failure of 'Dark City' (1998) & its similarities with 'The Matrix' (1999): "Interviewer: Are you surprised by how big a cult film it has become? Proyas: I was surprised it didn't achieve commercial success initially, but I'm happy it has had this long-lasting life after the fact. I was pretty disappointed the studio hadn't really managed to sell the movie in the way that they could have. I don't think they really knew what to make of it quite frankly. The studio put out a trailer that was quite clever. It was completely non-narrative, just music and imagery. The guys who made the trailer specifically wrote a piece of music for the trailer, and the whole thing felt handcrafted and definitely had a personality. I think people were genuinely impressed by it but it didn't explain to them what the movie was or give them an idea of the kind of experience they were going to get. I think it made audiences think it was some kind of a horror movie. As a result people kind of overlooked it in the theaters. I know 99% of the people who loved it and always ask me about it are people who saw it on video years later. How do you feel about the similarities the later 'The Matrix' (1999) has to 'Dark City' (1998)? If I answer that question honestly it sounds like sour grapes because obviously 'The Matrix' did better commercially than 'Dark City' did. 'Dark City' came out a year before 'The Matrix', one of my producers on 'Dark City' worked on 'The Matrix', and the Wachowskis saw 'Dark City' a good nine months before 'Dark City' came out in the theaters, so they had a good run at picking the more important cherries off the cake. I feel like it's a question I can't answer in any more detail than that, other than to say that maybe the Wachowskis should be asked the question rather than me." The Matrix came out 25 years ago this week. It has one of the great sci-fi opening scenes ever with a strange noir world, Bullet Time action and an absolute chad villain (Agent Smith). That opener also has a great business backstory: the Wachowski siblings initially asked Warner Bros for $180m, which was a wild sum for unproven directors. The studio ultimately agreed to $63m. To meet the lower budget, production moved to Australia in 1998 (it came out in 1999). The Wachowskis spent over 4 months of pre-production for the actors — Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), Keanu Reeves (Neo), Lawrence Fishburne (Morpheus), Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith) — to train in martial arts and gun-fighting. Warner Bro became concerned with the pace of production. They hadn’t seen much footage and didn’t have much visibility into the budget. To assuage studio execs, the sibling directors had to send over some film. Turns out they had already spent $5m+ on the opener (which was filmed over 4 days). So, they cut footage into a ~5-minute intro and added special FX. Let’s just say the studio was very satisfied with the result and left them alone afterwards. Reflecting on watching The Matrix for the first time, James Cameron said it was “one of the most profoundly fresh science fiction films ever made.” That tone is set right from the legendary opening.

"Like with Shunsuke, after he disappears, he ends up working in a strip theater in Japan. That whole section isn't really shown in the film. It existed in the script and filming but couldn't be included. It's because, the story should ultimately be about Kikuo's life and his journey towards becoming a National Treasure. So if Shunsuke's story had been shown in too much detail, it would change the balance of the plot. In the original novel, there are characters who play very important roles as well but some of them don't appear in the film the same way.
