While Eric Goldberg was animating for Chuck Jones on the Road Runner short CHARIOTS OF FUR (1994), Goldberg vented to Jones about all the executive interference on Disney's POCAHONTAS. Jones answered, "Well, you know, they'll always hate you because you can draw and they can't."

Lots of frustrated Disney animators were moonlighting on this cartoon under false names. Eric Goldberg was credited as "Claude Raynes," Will Finn was "Bill Snelgrove," Nik Ranieri was "Irene Arkin," etc.

Here's the interview where Eric Goldberg recounts the Chuck Jones quote, by the way. Lots of interesting thoughts here. Eric is such a great talent, we're lucky to have him.

AniMat and ToucanLDM have a pretty interesting interpretation of this idea which can really say a lot for the production of Pocahontas as a whole.

The comic-style animated words feel a little out of place to me, personally. In a traditional cartoon, I think the sound design should speak for itself, and Warner Bros. cartoons had amazing sound design already.

I think they're fun, but I can see that. Yeah, the old cartoons had amazing sound effects.

I used to think this too. But, being in manufacturing taught me that execs don't hate the creative process out of jealousy. They hate it because it adds lead time. It's the greatest sin to the Business Brained: Their numbers need to go up NOW, and you're in the way.

Always felt like a waste to me that the one time the Renaissance's capital C Cartoon animator got to direct a feature, it ended up being the stodgiest most middle- of- the-road movie of Disney's 90s output

I guess that explains the push execs are doing for AI art.

I always wondered how Eric, Nik and Will were able to freelance moonlight while also committed to Disney projects. When Chuck Jones sees a wacky genie, he wants the guy who drew the wacky genie.

Also this is one of the best animated sequence in the short
