While filming Splash (1984), John Candy once arrived late to the set and delayed filming, which was unusual for the actor, who was known for being professional. According to Ron Howard, Candy profusely apologized when he arrived, and Howard told him it was fine and that they would begin... shooting. Candy then revealed that he had not slept and was actually drunk. The night before, he had gone to a bar where he encountered Jack Nicholson, who recognized him and proceeded to buy him drinks throughout the night. Candy had told Nicholson, "But I've got to go shoot." Nicholson simply replied, "You're going to be all right, kid. Don't worry about it." Candy then went on to film his scene on the racquetball court, where he was hit by the ball, and managed to get it right in just three takes.show more

The next day, Nicholson arrived with red swells on his face and asked, "Ricky boy, you used spirit gum, didn't you?" Baker apologized, and Nicholson just replied, "Let's just hope it doesn't happen again."

Candy filmed all of his scenes in one 24 hour crunch, mainly as a favor to writer/producer John Hughes whom he had worked with twice before on two other films, and because the budget at that point couldn't afford him. Candy reportedly made only $414 for the role. When HOME ALONE director Chris Columbus worked with Candy again on the film ONLY THE LONELY one year later, he said Candy would sometimes joke about how much he earned versus how much the film grossed, which was almost $500,000 WW.

According to Dan Aykroyd, the budget for "The Blues Brothers" (1980) included "Cocaine" for night shoots. He said, "Everyone did it, including me. Never to excess, and not ever to where I wanted to buy it or have it. [But] John [Belushi], he just loved what it did. It sort of brought him alive at night—that superpower feeling where you start to talk and converse and figure you can solve all the world’s problems." John Belushi put off rehab for his worsening condition in order to complete the movie. He told his wife, “I’m fine, I can’t stop now until I finish the movie. It’ll be fine when it’s over.” For all the efforts of his friends and colleagues, Belushi was surrounded by enablers, according to Ned Zeman, though Landis did his best to convert them: “For God’s sake,” he told Carrie Fisher when she arrived on set, “if you see John doing drugs, stop him.” John Belushi's addiction was so bad that he disappeared while filming one of the night scenes. Dan Aykroyd looked around and saw a single house with its lights on. He went to the house and was prepared to identify himself, the movie, and that they were looking for Belushi. Quentin Tarantino recounts a dinner with Robert De Niro during the making of Jackie Brown, where he asked him whether he understood when he landed the role of Vito in The Godfather Part II, that it would change his life. It took him a little bit to kind of pick that up, but we so believed in him as a guy and his talent level that after a year, you could start to see it clicking.
