It is a quiet, haunting conclusion that perfectly captures the film’s central idea that true heroism sometimes means being misunderstood. Christopher Nolan later revealed that the final shot was actually an accident. He said, “I didn’t know how, visually, to end the film. The shot we ended up using, I only discovered in the dailies. Our setup was that we had the stunt guy on the bike and we would chase him with a vehicle while filming. He goes up a ramp and there’s a movie light shining down the ramp. He just flew into it, and it flares slightly around the edges of the cape. I saw that in the dailies and realized it was the tail end of the shot.” He added, “I thought, okay, that’s the end of the film. We just hang on that as long as we dare and then cut to black. You cut to black from light, which is unusual, but it felt like the right thing to do.”
