But in those 42 years, Cazale made magic: The Godfather, The Conversation, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and The Deer Hunter. It was a run for the ages. I absolutely adore Cazale & I’m thankful for the work he left us. 🎂

Possibly the greatest movie actor of all time who died relatively young. Godfather actor John Cazale who played Fredo would have been 90 years old today. I regard the performance from Cazale, in this scene, as the highest peak you can reach in acting. This level of acting has certainly been matched but, in my opinion, never bettered. His voice, his mannerisms, timing and the look in his eyes. It’s perfect. You could almost believe that Fredo was a real person that jumped into the body of John Cazale. A work of genius. This eerie 10-minute sequence in "Cape Fear" (1991), where Robert De Niro's 'Max Cady' tricks Juliette Lewis' 'Danielle' into meeting with him at the high school is what convinced Martin Scorsese to do the movie. He considers it "the crux" of the entire film and said, “It was the scene that made me make the movie. I realized if I can pull off that scene, with the actors and the writer, it'd be great." De Niro explained that he wanted Max Cady to have the ability perform Charles Manson-like “mind trips” on his victims. So, he felt the necessity to have this scene. Lewis said, "When [the scene] was over, it was like I had to come down. I just went straight to [De Niro] and said, 'God, that was fun.'” The sequence became one of the film's most talked-about moments and helped Lewis nab an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. When Spielberg and De Niro were trying to convince Scorsese to direct the picture over dinner, he rejected it as he "didn't want to get involved in remakes. It's a really difficult thing to do, especially if [the original film] is a good picture.” To convince him somehow, Spielberg said to him, "Listen, if you don't like the script, you can rewrite it." Scorsese, who was suffering from fatigue after post-production work on "Goodfellas" (1990) jokingly said that he had forgotten about that part (Screenwriting) of the process. How difficult was it to find the right two people for those roles? Martin Brest: Dealing with someone you would consider a very intense, dramatic actor, to me, is a great opportunity to find humorful moments. The idea of De Niro in this role, it wasn’t really conceived for somebody like that. But Jack Rapke, my agent at the time, said, “What about De Niro?” and I thought, “If I could work with Robert De Niro, I’ll figure out the rest later on.” If you’re thinking about comedy with a capital K, you wouldn’t think of him. But again, the way I approach humorful situations, I saw him as being a perfect actor. But once we had cast him, it was really hard to find somebody to complement him, and everybody wanted to play the part. It was a role that we needed people to read for it because it was really a question of micro-chemistry. That's a hell of a party trick. ROGAN: "That's a dude who has seen The Deer Hunter too many times. Didn't he give the government a bunch of laptops with viruses on them? Before James Toback's screenplay for "The Gambler" (1974) was accepted by the studio, he had met Robert De Niro on the suggestion of his friend, Lucy Saroyan who said that "De Niro was a genius & the only actor on earth who was going to be as great as Marlon Brando". Immediately, Toback set up a meeting with him & both of their visions matched the character. De Niro started to become the character after reading the script in real life by dressing and having the same haircut. He started to mimic most of the writer's characteristics. After Karel Reisz agreed to direct the movie, Toback made changes to the screenplay, which he said made it a "Widely expanded and deepened movie". Reisz interviewed Richard Dreyfus and Chris Sarandon and others for the lead role, but inexplicably resisted meeting De Niro. Finally, he agreed to meet De Niro after relentless pressure but insisted that Toback should not come for the dinner meet. Toback spoke to De Niro, who told Toback to call him after speaking with Reisz after the meeting. Reisz called Toback and firmly said, “Jim, I want to make your movie. And I want you — I need you — to be with me every day until the end. In fact, I can’t make this movie without you. But if you are going to insist on my using De Niro I will not make the movie.” Toback, who was stunned, replied, “He’s the guy! How can you not see that?” Reisz said, "I’m sorry. I won’t discuss it. He’s simply wrong for the part. He has the wrong temperament." While Toback kept on pressuring, Reisz harshly said, "If you continue trying to persuade me, I’ll have to resign from the movie tomorrow. We can talk about anything else. I will not talk about him." Toback told De Niro what had occurred. An agitated De Niro replied, "Jim, the guy didn’t even let me read. But Pesci refused - he wanted to hear the full blast of the gun, to immerse himself in the moment. He explains... “It was very hard for me to get as close to killing someone as possible in that scene, because it wasn't a contract killing, and it wasn't somebody that had to be…(it was) a kid.
