While I love Meta Quest hardware, the store and developer ecosystem is horrific. I can't even find my own game on the Meta Store and it's so slow. No wonder we only have 1k downloads after 2 weeks Meanwhile on Steam we had 10K+ downloads alone on week 1...

The state of LOW-FI and platform support (Death of PCVR): When the Kickstarter ran back in , the main focus was "Next-Gen VR", meaning at the time PCVR, with high hopes for PSVR2 (which hadn't been officially announced). During the next year or so, we (myself, Noah Rayburn and Mark Schramm #VR #AR #MR) focused purely on supporting PC VR hardware. Rift/S, Vive, Index (including controllers), all WMR devices, etc... Mark even added HOTAS and Leap Motion support. BUT, as I'm sure you know, PCVR has been in decline since around the launch of Half-Life: Alyx, which Anton Hand so eloquently called the punctuation mark on the gravestone of PCVR. The Rift store is a ghost town.. like officially.. even according to Meta, Viveport (lets not even go there), what else we got? WMR Store? Was that even a thing? Anyway... Lucky for us, PSVR2 was just over the horizon and we had the dev kits! How well is PSV2 doing though? Guess is (based on speaking with other top VR devs), not that great... Somewhere in there, the great and powerful Noah Rayburn was able to implement a pretty slick "non-VR mode" upon my request to be able to test the game without having to keep taking the HMD off and on while balancing controllers on my knees and working with janky Quest link stuff. Good news! Non-VR mode is great! No just for testing, but for playing. We decided to go full in on it's development and offer it to the consumers. Bonus, it also runs on Steam Deck! (See video below). Now as we gear up to finish the game and run out of money (hopefully in that order), I'm thinking a lot about the market for the game and our placement in it. We have a decent amount of wishlists (66k on Steam and 24k on PS5) so far. Hope is that launching as a PSVR2 title will capture a good chunk of those users, pushing it up on the general PSN store ranking (notoriously hard for indies to do otherwise), and we'll make some sales to traditional flat PS5 gamers as well. Snowballing a bit if we're lucky. Steam launch could do decently well if timed properly, with hopes of the same "VR first" snowballing effect. Why am I telling you all of this? I just thought it would be good to get it in writing and have a place to point. We are starting to run low on money (PCVR presales have basically dried up), so it's also to let you know that the fire is lit under my ass to ship this thing. That said, it won't ship until its good and done. A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad. Oh, and before you say "Why not port it to Quest", put down the pipe. I understand that you're not a developer, but take my word for it, that's not happening. Not with this budget(or lack thereof), this sized team , or this generation of devices. Ok. that's it. Everybody is talking about recursive self-improvement (RSI) and meta learning. Here is my old 2020 talk about this [1]. It has aged well. Example: humans still define the starts & ends of trials of many modern meta learners. My RSI systems since 1994 LEARN to (re)define them [2]! [1] Meta Learning Machines in a Single Lifelong Trial (talk for workshops at ICML 2020 and NeurIPS 2021, based on earlier talks since 1994). Abstract: the most widely used machine learning algorithms were designed by humans and thus are hindered by our cognitive biases and limitations. Can we also construct meta learning algorithms that can learn better learning algorithms so that our self-improving AIs have no limits other than those inherited from computability and physics? This question has been a main driver of my research since I wrote a thesis on it in 1987 [2]. Here I summarize our work on meta reinforcement learning with self-modifying policies in a single lifelong trial (since 1994), and mathematically optimal meta-learning through the self-referential Gödel Machine (since 2003). Many additional publications on meta-learning since 1987 can be found in the RSI overview [2]. [2] J. Schmidhuber (AI Blog, 2020-2025). 1/3 century anniversary of first publication on recursive self-improvement (RSI) and meta learning machines that learn to learn (1987). For its cover I drew a robot that bootstraps itself. 1992-: gradient descent-based neural meta learning. 1994-: meta reinforcement learning with self-modifying policies. 1997: meta RL plus artificial curiosity and intrinsic motivation. 2002-: asymptotically optimal meta learning for curriculum learning. 2003-: mathematically optimal Gödel Machine. 2020-: new stuff!

Open source software is GREAT. But "open source" AI is NOT like software - it's VERY different. Rob Miles cuts through the bullshit: ROB: Oh, hey, Meta. I heard Llama's weights leaked. That's rough, man. Information security's hard. How you holding up? META: Oh, we're great. Yeah, we're fine. We... actually, that was deliberate. We meant to do that. ROB MILES: Oh, really? META: Yeah... well, the second time anyway. It's called open source. Look it up. ROB MILES: Oh. Well, I love free and open source software, but do those principles really apply to network weights? How does that work? META: Open source is good for users because it lets them read the source code and see what the program is really doing and how it works. ROB MILES: Wait, have you found a way to tell how a model works by looking at its weights? META: No. But, it lets developers all over the world spot bugs in the code and submit patches. ROB: Wait, people are fixing bugs in Llama's weights? META: Well, no. People can fine tune it themselves, though. ROB: ?? Other companies offer fine tuning through APIs. ... So, hang on, if you can't actually read the code and know what it's doing, then network weights are effectively a compiled binary. So, in what sense is this open source? Why not call it like public weights? Why call it open source at all? META: I love open source. ROB: Well, I know a lot of your employees do, but you don't love anything. You're a giant corporation. What's in it for you? META: I love, love open source.
