While I was reporting for Article 14 on Facial Recognition Technology used by Delhi police, I found myself on their monitor. Delhi police was caught on camera surveilling a journalist on duty. When I confronted them, this is what they had to say.

@Article14live What kind of question is that ,Did you get permission to take our videos? That place is not your private property! Would you ask the same question at airport security. In a sensitive zone, simple rules must be followed. Why are you so scared if you're not doing anything wrong?

@Article14live Journalists are private citizens who aren’t exempt from the law. As long as you’re not doing anything shady, why would this worry you?

A special category of dumb people. Standing in public, repoting in an open space, capturing 24 x 7 whatever the hell they think fit and lecturing and asking question on a simple police cam zoom, just because they were zoomed right there. Madness may have a cure but not the people who want to be mad by choice.

@Article14live When you capture pics or videos of people in any rally do you take permission from them? Then why police need a permission to zoom someone where chaos is going on? Chaudhary ban ne ki aadat ho gayi hai sabki har jagah.

What law do you think you are invoking ? You are at a public protest ? That camera exists for public safety. Zooming in and out is one of the basic functions of such a camera. Is there any law which guarantees you privacy against that in a protest site ? If so please quote that. And if there is such a law, why would it permit journalists like you to do the same while preventing law enforcement agencies ? Curious to know what kind of biased law that is.

@Article14live Tell me bunked ur school without telling me u bunked ur school, that's a protest zone area, govt has every right to surveillance that public place. It's not your private bedroom that they are survillancing

@Article14live The cams will detect everyone including journalists, the facial detection likely will not be able to directly distinguish journalists from others. That doesn't mean you'd get a notice cause the police will filter it out unless you did something illegal in the protest.
