Yesterday, in Abuja, we launched the Nigeria AI Collective - a community of practice bringing together expertise from civil society, academic, tech, and other sectors working together to advance Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria and ensure its safe and ethical use, for the good of all in society. The collective is backed by several partners including Luminate who are committing $1.5million to support Nigeria’s effort towards developing our AI ecosystem.

The neglect of vulnerable children is not far removed from some of the crises that have overwhelmed us as a region. Last week, I sat with my brother Ydeen on his podcast, where we discussed some of the issues we encounter every day working in remote communities across Northern Nigeria. When children are abandoned to hunger, illness, illiteracy, and the streets, we are not only failing them; we are endangering the future. This is why government, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, parents, communities, the private sector, development partners, and security institutions must work together to address the overwhelming issue of street-connected children. Leaving children to fend for themselves on the streets is a keg of gunpowder.

As a nation of innovators and entrepreneurs, Nigeria must recognise the significance of Artificial Intelligence and the urgent need to explore and use it for the good of humanity. I would also like to thank the UK Government for inviting us to be part of the UK AI for Development Programme which will support our efforts to improve AI research and inclusive datasets. This partnership is a recognition of our commitment to the growth of AI in Nigeria as outlined in our Strategic Blueprint and evidenced by our initial launch of the National AI Research Scheme. #NigerianExcellence
