Canada and the U.S. have a longstanding territorial dispute over the sovereignty of the Northwest Passage. The United States believes that the Arctic passage is an international strait, while Canada believes that it's internal Canadian waters. I asked U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra to explain America's position and whether any concessions on claims to the Northwest Passage have been discussed in ongoing negotiations.

We have been consulting very closely with our Canadian colleagues, and coordinating with them on this issue. From our perspective, it is critical that the Canadian investigation proceed. It would be important that India work with the Canadians on this investigation. We want to see accountability and it's important that the investigation run its course and lead to that result...We have been engaged directly with the Indian govt as well. The most productive thing that can happen now is to see this investigation move forward, be completed. We would hope that our Indian friends would cooperate with that investigation as well. We are extremely vigilant about any instances of alleged transnational repression, something we take very seriously and it's important for the international system that any country that might consider engaging in such acts not do so. It's something that we're also focused on in a much broader way."

During the trucker convoy, many of us still believed in Canada. We had Canadian flags on our vehicles. Canadian flags on our lawns. We were proud Canadians who believed that flag still represented freedom, unity, and the right to peacefully disagree. Then we watched how Canada treated its own people. That moment changed a lot of Albertans. It forced us to ask a hard question: What country are we trying to save? For Albertans, independence began with heartbreak and betrayal. It began with realizing that the Canada we loved no longer loved us back. That is why I support Alberta independence.
