In this interview with the BBC earlier today, I welcomed the conviction of ex-foreign affairs minister Joseph Malanji and former treasury secretary Fredson Yamba for corruption. The duo’s conviction sends a clear message to today’s corrupt ministers and other high-profile officials that jail awaits them, however long it takes. Corruption is systemic in Zambia. It is regrettable that President Hichilema is only fixing former officials without fixing the problems that enabled them to abuse entrusted power for private gain: chronic institutional failures, weak legal architecture, and a selective or partisan approach to anti-corruption. The latter point explains why the corruption of successive current officials is only uncovered after change of government.

Yesterday I also raised the issue of a tax fraud convict, David Kalemera who has now been appointed to head a new unit to fight against corruption in URA. This was the response of the Prime Minister!
