According to a new ProPublica investigation, Texas has seen an increase in the rate of sepsis among women who lost their pregnancies in the second trimester since the state instituted one of the country’s strictest abortion bans and the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion. The investigation found that the rate of sepsis jumped by more than 50 percent in the two years since Texas’ near-total abortion ban went into effect. Stephanie Sy spoke with Lizzie Presser for more.

In the Seanad today, I welcomed the failure of the Social Democrats to remove the three-day waiting period for abortion. Thousands of women have taken advantage of this waiting period to rethink and as a result went ahead with their pregnancy. Surely this is a cause for celebration, not the opposite. It seems to be a strategy on the extreme Left of politics to keep pushing for wider access to abortion, if only to prevent any discussion of the tragedy taking place in our midst– a major increase in the number of abortions taking place each year, no government strategy to reduce abortion or promote positive alternatives, and cruel practices in late-term abortion situations. People with different views on whether or when abortion should be legal should surely acknowledge that each abortion is a tragedy and we should work to reduce the numbers taking place.
