The Trump administration is actually pursuing a peace agreement between Somalia’s federal government and the so-called secessionist region. This would allow the federal government access to Hargeisa, require Somaliland to accept its new borders, and stop opposing the newly recognized federal state in northeastern Somalia, the Northeast State. The separatists must abandon their unrealistic dreams. No one will recognize a state ruled by a single clan without a legitimate cause, especially in such a sensitive region as the Horn of Africa.
