While we are waiting for World Cup finals, here are DeepMind’s AI bots playing soccer in simulation! The agents don’t communicate with each other and only try to maximize their own incentive. But teamwork and complex strategies *emerge* through repeated competition!

Behaviors like passes, shoots, and assists are also emergent properties from reinforcement learning among a population of agents. This paper is really dense and engineering-heavy. I might find another time to do deep dive if there’s enough interest.

Meanwhile, sit back and enjoy World Cup! Science paper: New Scientist Video:

Congrats 🇦🇷 !!!🎉

This is absolutely amazing 👏 Very interesting to see the AI picking up collaborative patterns together to meet their goal. Also, they are hella floppers 🤣

excited about the apparent emergence of soccer flops 🟥

Excellent illustration of #Emergence. In early Complexity Theory, Emergence arose from interactions from the simple behavior of agents. Emergence in AI systems can arise from their interactions with the environment, or in the case of Deep Learning, from the learning process

it’s giving blue lock vibes

It's Football not Soccer.. Your AI already failed

Make a real 90min match with this please. And all the players should have some unique perks.

@ceobillionaire AI era is inevitable

@gbergesio So a week is 20’simulated years for deep mind?

Ultra nice! Love to learn more about it.

@ReplyGPT

It reminds me the RoboCup league which organized multi agent soccer competition

Everybody like Haaland🤣

Really astonished by the strategy of agents learned!

@gbergesio But did you see how he faked that boy with the pass back?

Is this not reinventing the wheel...FIFA and PES already have an AI that can play soccer

Do their own incentives align with team incentives?

Not bad but real players fall more often

@DIMENSION_YT @alexpapa_ pourquoi je pleure

the sport is called football

@Mehdinait10

Is this VPT?

No, it’s an older work last year, using population-based RL

@gbergesio Its beautiful

Meta AI researchers are fretting over the threat of Chinese AI, whose quality caught American firms, including OpenAI, by surprise.
