South Africa pioneered coal to liquid fuel technology so completely that China's Shenhua Group had to sign licensing deals with Sasol just to build their own version of it. Yet the country that invented energy independence is still held hostage by a war happening thousands of kilometres away, proof that owning the technology and depending on it are two very different things. Sasol's Secunda plant in Mpumalanga remains the biggest coal to liquid facility on the planet, built specifically so oil embargoes could never choke the country again. Fast forward to February this year, the US and Israel strike Iran, Iran shuts the Strait of Hormuz, and global oil supply takes one of its biggest hits in modern history. Within weeks South African motorists are paying double digit increases at the pump for a war that has nothing to do with us, because Sasol only supplies a portion of what the country consumes. The rest still comes in as imported crude priced in dollars, so every flashpoint from Tehran to the Rand's exchange rate gets passed straight onto your fuel bill. We had the blueprint to insulate ourselves from exactly this decades before China even started copying it, the real question is why we never scaled it up when we had every reason to.
