The manufacture, sale, stocking or distribution of such drugs is treated as a grave offence under Section 27, which prescribes a punishment ranging from a minimum of 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment to life imprisonment, in addition to substantial fines. Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj says those claiming that there are no drugs in Punjab are welcome to approach them, as they are ready to provide data on individuals from various villages who are addicted to drugs, particularly ‘Chitta’. Jathedar Gargajj says the drug menace, especially Chitta, is at its peak in Punjab and the state government must take responsibility for eradicating it. He further says the Centre must effectively counter the supply of drugs across the border, while the state government must take responsibility for tackling drug abuse within Punjab’s villages.
