We paid for that. Russia is basically a big oil company with a huge military. Without oil and gas revenues, they won't be able to conduct this war. Lifting oil sanctions would mean supporting the Russian war machine. Inside NATO, we now see that Russia can remain aggressive even after the war in Ukraine.
