If seizures are up 2,000%, that means enforcement is actually working. The real issue is stopping the flow at the source. Instead of just blaming Canada, maybe it's time for a stronger, coordinated effort on both sides of the border.

21,000 pounds of fentanyl were seized at our borders last fiscal year. That's enough fentanyl to kill more than 4 billion people. If Canada and Mexico want to avoid tariffs, all they have to do is stop the flow of deadly drugs into America!

Before a single question was asked, she went straight after The Washington Post for what she called a dishonest and manipulative headline on the fentanyl crisis. Their headline: “The mysterious drop in fentanyl seizures on the U.S.-Mexico border.” Leavitt called it what it was: spin. “How is this mysterious?” she asked. “There is no mystery about why there is a decrease in fentanyl coming into the United States!” She pointed directly to the administration’s border policies and cooperation with Mexico as the reason for the decline. “This administration’s strong border policies are the reason there has been a decrease in fentanyl trafficking,” she said. “His strengthened relationship with Mexican President Sheinbaum and all of the measures he has been taking to deter illegal human and drug trafficking at our United States southern border is the reason for plummeting fentanyl seizures at the U.S. Border.” But the issue wasn’t just the headline. It was what Leavitt described as intentional narrative engineering. “This is clearly trying to intentionally manipulate the minds of Americans, and I think the American people understand why there has been fentanyl drop.” And when the Post ignored the administration’s full explanation? “Our office responded to this inquiry, we provided a whole host of the reasons that fentanyl seizures have dropped at the southern border, and The Washington Post refused to run them,” she said. “And that’s despicable.”

Yesterday, I spoke from the Senate floor in support of the effort to overturn the emergency declaration for the northern border that has been used to impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada. While I share the President’s goal of stemming the tide of dangerous fentanyl that flows into the United States, the fact is, the vast majority of the fentanyl in America comes from the southern border. In fiscal year 2024, less than 1% of fentanyl seizures occurred at our northern border, and the Canadians are working cooperatively with our government to stop that trafficking. Unlike Mexico and China, Canada is not complicit in this crisis. The State of Maine’s economy is deeply integrated with Canada, our most important trading partner. From home heating oil, gasoline, and other petroleum products, to Maine’s paper mills, forest products businesses, agricultural producers, fishermen, and lobstermen, the tariffs on Canada would be detrimental to Maine families and our local economies. The price hikes that will affect Mainers—from the grocery store, to filling their gas and heating oil tanks—will be so harmful. And as price hikes always do, they will hurt those the most who can afford them the least.
