It’s “Hey, I see you there, we dont have to stop and talk. I’m just letting you know I see you and recognize you but I’m checking if you’re cool and letting you know I’m cool. We don’t have to fight either because we’re not animals like other races willing to kill each other over perceived slights.” It’s literally the same subtle reminder like when you’re driving a backcountry road and two guys in a truck give each other the quick wave as they pass. Whenever we go out anywhere, I am always doing threat assessment, so the mild smile is "Oh, you caught me trying to figure out if you are about to start some shit that I have to deal with, so just know that I know and behave yourself." LOL

It's just a "I see you" gesture and not super polite, just a neutral greeting without saying anything. It happens if you both make eye contact and not enough time for an audible greeting or you don't feel like saying anything. Maybe you both have an embarrassing moment and want to move on quickly.

It can mean all those things but there is a process... If you pass each other it's just a hello. If someone is saying some bullshit and you trying to not say something you wanna say just to move the fuck on because words are indeed precious and so is the skin of your knuckles so you just swallow it down and move on but you give a warning which usually ends with a "I see/Uh huh" and a "I have to get going" letting them know you are done talking or being around them.
