In countries Karp can’t name. Karp: “Super proud of the role we play, especially in places we can’t talk about.” Not being coy. Being careful. There’s a difference. No CEO in the history of public markets has said what came next. Karp: “And when it’s necessary to scare enemies and on occasion kill them.” Then directly to his investors: “And we hope you’re in favor of that.” No apology. No qualifier. Just a man asking if his shareholders have the stomach for what they actually own. Then he turned to Wall Street. Dismissed analysts who can’t handle “the burden of actually looking at the math” or “the burden of being honest about what an enterprise software company is.” He wasn’t talking to them anymore. He was done with them. Every other company buries what they do in footnote 47 between legal disclaimers and risk disclosures. Karp put it in the headline. Then looked around the room to see who was still standing. That’s not a shareholder letter. That’s a man telling you exactly who he is and exactly what he built and daring you to look away.
