Try it in your browser!

Now wait until it 95% complete and have the computer shut off.

i miss this, really felt like you were getting your life back together

Norton Utilites Speed Disk was the GOAT.

lol watching this as a kid is what got me super interested in computers

I swear every time I did that, I didn't notice change in speed or performance. Just hours wasted.

I remember my frustration when Windows XP implemented simple stripe for whole drive. Life was not the same anymore.

To be fair, this was strangely satisfying. As a society we have lost the notion of delayed gratification.

I used to watch this process for hours as a kid

Somehow when we've watched this, our souls were also fixed and we were feeling better ;)

I still much prefer the DOS version which showed the disk on a single screen. :)

Nigga, I use to watch this for hours.

this was my favourite thing to do as kid

🤣🤣🤣 I did this like a ritual. Really thought I was doing something. 🤣🤣🤣

Oh the hours I spent watching this I would fragment my hard drive just so I could watch it de-frag

Good memories but just not the same without that magical sound of the hardware literally moving your data.

An accountant formatted a HD by mistake in my office. I spent all night rebuilding the FAT to recover the data and afterwards, i did a defragmentation. My boss asked me "Was it a virus?" and i told him "yes, a human-size virus that knows accounting". 🤣

Noooooooooooooo, i don’t want to remember this!

So good golden times: you start the defrag and leave the computer, then, you come back and see the BSOD. The PC won't boot again and you have to pay a technician to recover the data in a new disk sacrifing the old one. Finally, the technician says that the data is lost

The ultimate in catharsis. A bad world made right.

Great times.

Here's a Screensaver of an older defrag you can run in your browser.

Not with the default windows app but I had Norton utilities at the time , I loved it , watched the hole process while sipping coffee

I remember doing this on my Mac

ја

almost as exciting as watching a zmodem transfer at 9600 baud

When you got toward the end and it started flashing runs of 40 or 50 blocks at a time and you knew the finish line was in sight. What a rush!

Sorry, boss. I can't do any work until the defrag is complete.

There is no “could” involved, you had to watch it.

Loved launching it.

That was peak entertainment on a Thursday evening

well partly because there was nothing else to do...

I watched it for hours back then and it was a boring nightmare.
