There is no USA/China method. There are just different ways to simplify or develop expressions. You learn them all in school — the smart part is choosing the most efficient one to start with.

They do that in America too, you're supposed to, it's called cross cancelling.

It is not about US and China "method"... there is no such a thing. It is about having enough algebra experience to notice that both terms are divisible by 9 leading to a simpler computation. Any high school student competent in math, both in US and China, will see that.

I was taught the way on the right. By the way that is not the « China way », it is just a different way.

9x8 =72 and it would take 13-5 to get 8 So pretty easy in 2 steps.

i'm from the US, and I would simply divide through by 9 on such a problem.

Step 1: Divide both sides by 9 Step 2: Add 5 to both sides

we're taught both in america, though. just depends if you want to do it the long or short way or not

Without looking at what China is going to do, I know they are the smartest. Power belongs to USA but smartness belongs to China 🇨🇳

TODOS los que enseñamos matemática usamos la segunda forma. La otra es sólo si estás enseñando distributiva

I took my first year of algebra in 1988, so my memory of the class is a little dim, but I'm pretty sure were learned both.

Why would the “US” version not divide both sides of the equation by 9 to start? It’s what I would do, and I’m American.

Whoever claims that these are typical for the US or China is definitely NOT the smartest. And now do this for =71.

This is wrong! Americans learn both methods. Smarter people can do that problem in their head with no paper. It is the individual and the person that studies the most are the smart people.
