That's a trick that works in one particular circumstance: c(x + k) = nc If the equation doesn't fit that form, it can slow you down: 9(x + 3) = 17 x + 3 = 17/9 x = 17/9 - 3 x = 17/9 - 27/9 x = -10/9 Instead of: 9(x + 3) = 17 9x + 27 = 17 9x = 17 - 27 9x = -10 x = -10 / 9

I learned both ways in the USA. The first one 25 years ago in middle school, the second not much later, maybe in college algebra, whenever I formally learned the distributive property.

This is not china is just a more advanced way of thinking because is multiplying both sides by 1/9 in any engineering or math degree that is basic. For basic schoolers is easy to learn on the other way.

It's not about being smart, these are two different approaches to solving a problem. The method on the left requires higher understanding of algebra. So best to learn both methods.
