Um, this is now exaggerated bullshit. The truth is we lived in high trust communities. Parental Authority was respected. Kids were more independent. A sense of freedom & personal responsibility was established at a young age. Most of the safety legislation came about because of fringe case retards and expanded after importing peoples not accustom to living in a free-high trust society. The dichotomy with freedom is that it requires peoples with self-control/discipline.

Respectfully, I think, that's horse shit! Who knows if those milk cartons weren't propaganda. Over a solid 30yr period from the 70s threw the 90s not single kid in the dense suburb communities I grew up was on a milk cartoon or victimized by perverts. It would have been all over the schools. Its not because people are more aware today because of the internet. Its because it didn't happen. Not in the America I grew up. I could leave my bike on my front lawn all day, and no one would take it.

Well, if we are talking about kids, we weren't just street rats either, everyone had a curfew. We were home by sun down. We check-in during the day. Parents were at least acquainted with who are friends were and their families. They knew where we hung out. a park, a friends house, etc. Parents were not negligent. But today, letting your kid walk to a local park, can be considered negligent. And maybe it is today, because communities are no longer high trust. We live in fear.

In the wintertime, schools would push the playground snow into a pile the size of a mountain range. We played king of the hill from about 4th grade to 6th grade. I never see kids today playing on huge piles of snow.

This wasn’t just true in the 80’s. It was even more true about the 70’s and for many every generation before it. Stay at home moms pushed their kids outside to play. We ran in packs roaming even miles from home exploring every adventure fully.

I LOVED the 80's. Those were the best years of my life. That was high school & college for me. Good times. But, please know we didn't throw Jarts up in the air & dodge them. Thats not how the game worked. & we waited for the water to stop being brown before drinking from a hose..

Best times of my life. No social media, no laws/rules for that sort of thing, the ice cream truck, yelling 'car' when playing in the street, coming home when the street lights were on. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

This is great. I was a kid in the 50s and 60s. I always ask, if things were so dangerous for kids back then, how come the boomers survived and multiplied? So many kids, the parents couldn't keep track. Every house had at least 5 kids, and all the women were pregnant.

My friends and I would take our bikes and be gone all day Saturday. None of our parents had a clue where we were or how far away from home we used to go. For me, it was riding to the Mississippi River and climbing on the underside of the bridges or in the nearby woods.
