Whoever builds this idea first is guaranteed a $1B exit in two years. Chad Janis just sold Gruns to Unilever for $1.2B. Here is his next top-tier idea that he's giving away for free: The problem: your paycheck hits your checking account, then you need willpower to allocate it.... show more

@chadjanis what? you can do this with any bank or payroll software like gusto or deel you break apart your W2 paycheck to hit different accounts so when it hits and you see the money in your spending $$$ it’s all been allocated to the right places

@chadjanis This assumes that the average person actually values budgeting and they do not. It’s solving a problem you think should be important but isn’t

@chadjanis Every single payroll platform offers this

This has been tried repeatedly since the early 2010s. None got the $1B exit. The slide is clean. Production isn't. Paychecks arrive late, get reissued, change frequencies. Bills aren't fixed percentages of income. Refunds and reversals hit the same rails. Intercepting ACH before it lands is not casual infrastructure, it's a regulated money movement stack with real failure modes. You ship this by handling the long tail, not by getting the W-2 case right.

@chadjanis I mean just set up auto payments and auto deposits 1. Autopay for rent/mortgage 2. Auto withrdawal for investments / 401k, etc 3/ Autopay car payment What am I missing?

This is such a wealthy person take. Most ppl have to decide what they are going to pay and when. They can’t just have shit auto pay as they might not have enough money and might need to delay some payments etc. most ppl essentially live paycheck to paycheck. Not to mention almost all services / companies offer an auto pay option and even give you a discount for using it as they know without the chance they get the money is lower.

@chadjanis woah

@chadjanis Potential for much bigger than $1B business. We do this @albertapp and have millions of customers. Next level is agents working in the background on money busywork: pay your credit cards/loans, do your taxes, monitor your finances, etc. This is what we're launching with Genius.

@chadjanis The act of automation is not hard. Knowing how much and where to put it is the hard part. This doesn’t solve that. At all.

@chadjanis This is @GetSequence . Not just income → checking. We move money across all your accounts, savings, investments, RIA - automatically. Set the rules once, never think about it again. 300K+ monthly transactions $2.5 Billion+ routed

@chadjanis That’s called

@chadjanis This is just ADP enabling you to split your payroll direct deposits.

@chadjanis The book Profit First by @MikeMichalowicz is the model for this. I requested this as a feature from @mercury back in 2013 and they built it in not long after that.

It already exists. - Get a @mercury personal account - Spin up sub-accounts as envelopes (invest, taxes, rent, fun) - create api keys with scopes SendMoney, internal transfers only - vibe code a workflow worker to check for a big payment to come in via GitHub actions. If threshold hits, disperse to sub accounts - done, never see a full paycheck again

@chadjanis This guy tries way too hard to sound profound on the podcast when you just got good at slinging over priced candy.

@chadjanis You can do this with @mercury personal accounts. Sub accounts for taxes, savings. Invest accounts for investing. Auto transfers to automate the flows.

@chadjanis payroll providers let you split, also this ignores the fact that most people are not in a position to save and invest, or care about budgeting to begin with

Tarpit idea. Been attempted before. Sounds great everyone loves it but people find workarounds and stick to it. Not enough of a pain point, plus the financial literacy of the mass population is trash. Most people won’t even realize they need to be doing this. The financial literate ones who do, already figured it out. Classic tarpit.

@chadjanis Idk if this is a billion dollar idea. Stripe or banking apps could implement this in a weekend.

@chadjanis I’ve been using Sequence for years and it solves this exact problem

@chadjanis Interesting idea. The regulatory tape would be the major barrier, but it could work for a neobank or payroll processor. You would also need enterprise and employees to both opt-in, which could be difficult.

@chadjanis Biggest obstacle: People have to proactively set this up.

@chadjanis 1B$ project here

@chadjanis Pretty easy to do from a fintech standpoint, handful of middle layer banking services that can do this with a few api calls and plaid account. Happy to talk through this with anyone interested!

@chadjanis this has been around for a while

@chadjanis The paycheck-allocation problem is real but the trap is building it as a budget app. Budget apps are graveyards of good intentions. The version that wins is invisible - automatic split the moment money lands, with friction to undo. Tool, not tracker.

@chadjanis does it

@chadjanis Literally what @GetSequence does..

@chadjanis It’s Wealthfront

@chadjanis The tech exists yes. But most of these companies want full payments on rent or leases so you’d have to find a company that wants to make that small, small spread of the carry over. Super dangerous.

@chadjanis @grok do you think it’d succeed and does it already exist if so what’s the names of the comp

@chadjanis

@chadjanis Wealthfront already does this
