Why the IMF Is Dangerous: Zambia as a Case Study Zambia’s story is one of the clearest examples of why the IMF is not a rescuer, and Africans need to stop treating it like one. When Zambia ran into crisis, the response was not to help the country build lasting strength. It was to cut food subsidies, reduce spending on education and healthcare, and strip the state of control over its own strategic assets. The copper mines, which should have remained central to Zambia’s economic future, were pushed back into foreign hands. That is not support. That is economic domination packaged as reform. This is why Africans have to look more critically at what so-called help from Western-led financial institutions has actually done across the continent. Time and again, the pattern is the same: countries enter crisis, external lenders step in with conditions, and those conditions weaken public systems, deepen hardship, and erode national control over resources. What is presented as financial assistance often leaves African nations poorer, more dependent, and less able to determine their own path. It's time we call it what it is: neo-colonialism operating through the deceptive language of economic rescue.

From education to energy and transportation, what used to be strong state institutions have gradually given way to private alternatives that are driven by profit, not public good. IMF & WORLD BANK HAVE NOT HELPED AFRICA How can we trust institutions established during colonial times by the very forces that colonised us? This is the question posed by Fadhel Kaboub (Fadhel Kaboub فاضل قابوب on X), an associate professor of economics at Ohio's Denison University, who critiques global financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Despite their inclusive names, these institutions act as neo-colonial tools, deepening poverty and dependency in Africa and the Global South. After decades of so-called ‘aid,’ little progress has been made in Africa, while Western countries advance by exploiting its resources. For example, the foreign-backed proxy war over natural resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has lasted over 30 years. Instead of addressing exploitation, the World Bank supports projects like the Inga Dam, which critics say facilitate further resource extraction under the guise of aid. Western powers, led by the US and supported by Europe and the G7, control these institutions. They back initiatives like the Lobito Corridor, a 1,300-kilometre strip of land featuring a railway that snakes through Zambia, the DRC and Angola to ship Africa’s resources across the Atlantic Ocean. The World Bank also supported apartheid South Africa, a history it prefers to forget. Given that Africa pays out more in debt and resource extraction than it receives in aid, is it not time for the rest of the continent to reject these colonial-era models and pursue African-led development, like our siblings in the Sahel? The Zimbabwean Government has told both Zimbabweans living in South Africa and the South African government that it will not pay a cent towards healthcare services provided to Zimbabwean nationals in South African public hospitals. According to the South African government, 70% of women giving birth at Musina Hospital in Limpopo are Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe’s healthcare system collapsed years ago due to rampant corruption, forcing many citizens to seek medical care in neighbouring countries. Most Zimbabweans with serious health conditions turn to South Africa, while those from Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North often go to Zambia, where they receive free treatment. Zimbabweans without immigration documentation are being chased out of South African public hospitals by vigilante groups like Dudula. There is a huge illegal immigration crisis in South Africa, driven by the collapse of the Zimbabwean economy caused by corruption and rigged elections—elections which the ruling ANC in South Africa has openly endorsed. A nation that cannot treat its sick, run a decent economy without massive corruption, or hold free and fair elections has not just failed its people; it has exported its failure to neighbours now forced to carry the burden of its collapse. Sadly, the powerful ANC political elites in South Africa continue to turn a blind eye to ZANUPF’s delinquent behaviour, which has created a domestic crisis within South Africa itself.

Prof. Steve Keen on IMF: Asia Learned To Break Away, It's Time Africa Did The Same For decades, Africa's relationship with the IMF has been characterised by a familiar cycle of debt, economic dependency, deindustrialisation, and poverty. As country after country has fallen into the trap of faithfully following the "advice" of the IMF, Africa's economic numbers tell a very clear story about what results such obedience has brought the continent. In this November 2025 interview with Going Underground, Australian Economist Prof. Steve Keen plainly addressed the elephant in the room - that Africa must as a matter of urgency, end its relationship with the IMF if it intends to grow economically just as South Asia did in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian economic crisis. While this is by no means new or groundbreaking information, it is a useful reminder that the same predatory colonial structures that were highlighted by some of Africa's greatest revolutionary thinkers of the 20th century remain active today, and are still delivering on their core remit of maintaining Africa in artificial poverty for the benefit of the western empire. Prof. Steve Keen on IMF: Asia Learned To Break Away, It's Time Africa Did The Same For decades, Africa's relationship with the IMF has been characterised by a familiar cycle of debt, economic dependency, deindustrialisation, and poverty. As country after country has fallen into the trap of faithfully following the "advice" of the IMF, Africa's economic numbers tell a very clear story about what results such obedience has brought the continent. In this November 2025 interview with Going Underground, Australian Economist Prof. Steve Keen plainly addressed the elephant in the room - that Africa must as a matter of urgency, end its relationship with the IMF if it intends to grow economically just as South Asia did in the aftermath of the 1997 Asian economic crisis. While this is by no means new or groundbreaking information, it is a useful reminder that the same predatory colonial structures that were highlighted by some of Africa's greatest revolutionary thinkers of the 20th century remain active today, and are still delivering on their core remit of maintaining Africa in artificial poverty for the benefit of the western empire. For decades, the West has spent billions of dollars in Africa, funding “research” “, innovation”, and “training” journalists, acquiring media houses in all but name, and backing social initiatives that do little or nothing to address the fundamental problems that Africa faces. Indeed, when it comes to supporting industrial, agricultural, pharmaceutical and military research that could actually improve Africa’s economic and political situation, these generous grants are nowhere to be seen from Western nations – only from the nations farther East, who Africans are meant to believe are their enemies. It is a new form of colonial domination dressed up as generosity, and African nations must wake up to this reality.

The same Western powers preaching democracy today did not build their own countries through real democracy. And the version they export to Africa often serves foreign interests more than African people. When politics is controlled by money, foreign interests, and periodic elections that change little, the result is predictable. And they borrow the American dollars from the IMF to do that. But that then puts them into the same problem they’ve had for centuries, ever since colonialism destroyed that continent, that they have had their resources run down. They don’t have the domestic capabilities they used to have. They have to import and that then gets them trapped in exporting for the sake of financing their foreign debt. And that is a disastrous process. The Southeast Asians kicked the IMF out a long time ago. The 1997 Asian financial crisis, particularly Indonesia.
