Those tricone / bearing ('roller cone') bits are not expensive they are relatively cheap and designed to break up rocks (like sandstone) by crushing action. The more expensive PDC (Polycrystalline Diamond Compact) are like 10X more expensive designed for shales and last long.

It's hard to imagine how a tri-cone bit manages to crush it's way through sandstone. An entirely different action than a twist drill cutting through steel.
