I think Isaac Newton figured this out a long time ago.

Why can't the ship engineers design a reverse thruster to stop the ship in a short time, this will counter the forward momentum instantly

It’s called momentum. Mass x velocity. Obviously a ship has a large mass and so has huge momentum even at relatively low speeds. To reduce its momentum to zero requires a very large force as explained by Newton’s second law of motion.

Massive ships have enormous mass, so even at low speeds their momentum (mass × velocity) is huge—giving them massive inertia that takes miles and minutes to stop or turn.

Massive, massive weight + low friction surface.

Und warum fahren alle Schiffe übers Wasser? Ach ja, damit es nicht so staubt, wenn sie bremsen.

Because they take pier pressure instead of brakes.

It's all about insane momentum and inertia. Those massive ships (hundreds of thousands of tons) are moving on water basically zero friction compared to roads. Even at slow speeds like 5-10 knots, their kinetic energy means they can glide for miles after engines stop or reverse.

1/2mv^2 is a bitch when m is on the order of a hundred thousand tonnes.

a) mass b) no brakes c) water provides much less attrition than asphalt.

The core reason is simple: mass + low resistance = huge stopping distances.

Я так понимаю, вы физику в школе не проходил!? Почему фуру дяжелее остановить, чем легковой автомобиль, при одинаковой скорости ( тормозной путь)?

Jesus wept - Have you ever heard of "Inertia". Mass x Velocity. Is your profile fantasy. Even a basic architect should know that.

Much time was spent uploading videos and asking questions instead of doing personal research. The quest for engagement has eroded common sense.
