Why can't I read the Qur'an in English

You can and you should if English is your only language. The majority of muslims are not Arabic speaking ! You should read Quran in the language you can understand. If by reading Quran you do not understand what that is written in it then you may as well not read it.

All languages have contextual meaning and nuance.
