The way I explain this is: a² – a² = (a + a)(a – a) and also a² – a² = a(a – a) ∴ (a + a)(a – a) = a(a – a) cancelling the common favor (a – a), we get: a + a = a ⇒ 2a = 1a ⇒ 1 = 2. So if we are allowed to divide by zero, we can get nonsense…

Please mention IEEE-754, which has Inf and NaN as operators. This has been inside most computers since the mid-90s. DragginMath has them, too, even thought it only does integer arithmetic.
