In 1962, following a tour with the British SAS, Charlie Beckwith wrote a paper proposing the U.S. Army create a counterterrorist unit based on his experience with the 22 Special Air Service. In late 1975, after commanding Project Delta in Vietnam and following a series of terrorist attacks in Europe, he was asked to dig that paper out for a meeting in Washington, D.C. Later, at an August 1976 conference at Fort Benning, Georgia, a plan to establish what would become one of the most elite counterterrorist units in the world began to take shape. The following year, in December of 1977, Colonel Beckwith returned to the JFK Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina from a trip to Europe where he was meeting with the SAS and German GSG 9. Catching up on message traffic he found one dated November 19, 1977. This message officially authorized the activation of Delta Force. John Lincoln Clem — one of the youngest soldiers to ever serve in the U.S. Army. Born in Ohio in 1851. His mother was killed in a train accident in 1861. Two years later, at age 9, he tried to enlist in the Union Army and was turned away for being too small. He didn’t go home. He followed the 22nd Michigan anyway and became their unofficial drummer boy. The men took him in and paid him from their own pockets. Shiloh, 1862: artillery fire tore his drum apart. From then on, they called him “Johnny Shiloh.” He officially enlisted in 1863 as a musician. Chickamauga, age 12: during the Union retreat, a Confederate officer reportedly ordered him to surrender. Clem fired a sawed-off musket and made it back to Union lines through the chaos. Gen. George H. Thomas later promoted him to sergeant, making him one of the youngest non-commissioned officers in Army history. Newspapers dubbed him the “Drummer Boy of Chickamauga.” He was wounded, captured, exchanged, and mustered out at just 13. Most kids would be done. Clem wasn’t. Ulysses S. Grant later helped him secure a commission. Clem stayed in the Army for decades in quartermaster roles, rising steadily through the ranks. He retired in 1915 as a brigadier general. Congress advanced him to major general on the retired list the next year. He was buried with full honors at Arlington. From runaway kid to general officer. In 1942, Clark Gable's wife, Carole Lombard, passed away in an airplane crash. He was emotionally and physically devastated, and decided to join the Army Air Force. Although he was beyond the draft age at the time the U.S. entered World War II, he enlisted as a private in the Army Air Force on Aug. 12, 1942, at Los Angeles. He attended the Officers' Candidate School at Miami Beach, Florida, and graduated as a second lieutenant on Oct. 28. He then attended aerial gunnery school and in February 1943, on personal orders from Gen. Hap Arnold, went to England to make a motion picture about aerial gunners in action. He was assigned to the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook, and although neither ordered nor expected to do so, flew operational missions over Europe in B-17s to obtain the combat film footage he believed was required for producing the movie, titled "Combat America." Gable returned to the U.S. in October 1943 and was relieved from active duty as a major on June 12, 1944, at his own request, since he was over-age for combat. Because his motion picture production schedule made it impossible for him to fulfill his AAF Reserve officer duties, he resigned his commission on Sept. 26, 1947. Two years after the death of his wife, Clark joined Irene Dunne to launch the USS Carole Lombard, in honor of Carole and her dedication to her country. Then in 2015 someone added fake subtitles making it look like he was a designer mocking the new MacBook. Five million views in a month. The format spread everywhere. Politicians, tech companies, sports scandals. His face became one of the most used meme templates on the internet. His laughing close-up became a Twitch emote called KEKW used over 400 million times. When he became seriously ill in 2020 and needed his leg amputated, fans who had never met him raised over fourteen thousand euros for his medical care and a wheelchair. He sent a video thanking them. They are not taught about the Provisions of Oxford in twelve fifty-eight, often called England's first written constitution, which placed the king under a council of fifteen and required Parliament to meet three times a year. They are not taught about the Provisions of Westminster in twelve fifty-nine, which subjected the barons themselves to the same law they had forced upon the king. They are not taught about the Charter of the Forest, which restored the right to graze, gather firewood, and live on common land, and which remained in force for seven hundred and fifty-four years. They are not taught about the Provisions of Oxford in twelve fifty-eight, often called England's first written constitution, which placed the king under a council of fifteen and required Parliament to meet three times a year. They are not taught about the Provisions of Westminster in twelve fifty-nine, which subjected the barons themselves to the same law they had forced upon the king. They are not taught about Simon de Montfort, an earl born in France who died for England, who summoned the first Parliament in English history to include ordinary commoners alongside the great lords. He had brought them there himself. Coming home from India there were safer roads, but he chose the Gedrosian Desert, in what is now southern Iran and Pakistan. The Greek historian Arrian is clear that he knew what he was doing. He went that way because almost nobody had ever brought an army through it alive: legend said the queen Semiramis came out the other side with twenty men, and Cyrus the Great with seven. Alexander wanted to beat them both. The crossing took sixty days. Arrian writes that the suffering on that march was out of all proportion to anything his troops had endured in Asia. They moved at night, and men fell asleep where they collapsed. The sick were left at the roadside, because there was nobody to carry them and no time to stop. Somewhere in the middle of it, a few soldiers went looking for water and found a tiny trickle in a gully. They scraped up what they could, tipped it into a helmet, and carried it back to their king... Every man watching him was dying of thirst. So was he. "Alexander, with a word of thanks for the gift, took the helmet and, in full view of his troops, poured the water on the ground." There was not enough for all of them, so he would not take what he could not give. And Arrian records what that did to an army of men who could barely stand: "So extraordinary was the effect of this action that the water wasted by Alexander was as good as a drink for every man in the army." John Carpenter on how Howard Hawks's "Rio Bravo" (1959) inspired him to become a filmmaker: "As I got older I began to see that certain directors did certain things. One of the earliest examples of this was Roger Corman. I started going to see these exciting, fast, kind of cheesy but really fun monster movies, and there was one name that kept coming up on the screen: Roger Corman. 'It Conquered the World' (1956), 'Not of This Earth' (1957), 'Attack of the Crab Monsters' (1957), 'The Undead' (1957)... But | really understood for the first time what a director did when I saw 'Rio Bravo' in 1959. There was something about that movie that was like home and I can't really explain it. It was held over in Bowling Green for three or four weeks in a row because people kept coming to see it. I abandoned to see what was new in the other movie house in town to see this movie every weekend again and again because there was something in it that was different from the other westerns I had seen. I had certainly seen John Wayne before. He had become a part of my growing-up experience. He was the action guy, the cowboy. He was the guy in 'Flying Tigers' (1942) who was flying the airplanes. So what was so different about that movie? Then I became aware of this credit: “Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.” I looked at the poster and I said to myself, “Who is this guy? He didn't write the movie and he wasn't starring in it so why is his name up here? And why is he last in the credits?” All these things started to occur to me, but it was the emotional impact of the film that got me to start using my brain. Please spare a thought for Michael Ward, who was born on this day (yesterday, sorry Michael!) in Carnmenellis, Cornwall in 1909. Michael was the very first actor I plucked up the courage to contact for an interview, way back in April 1989. He’d recently celebrated his 80’s birthday yet was wheelchair bound, had no family and had basically been forgotten about by the industry. As well as getting my interview we became firm friends and I kind of looked after him for the last eight years of his life. Every Sunday I’d arrive at his flat in Maida Vale and take him to my mum’s place where we’d have lunch and watch videos of some of the films he was in. Apart from the odd television repeat I don’t think he’d really seen himself on TV much and as the memories came flooding back he’d reel off story after story. One of my last memories of Michael happened shortly before he died in 1997. He’d decided to grow a beard and when I saw him I said something along the lines of, ‘My word, you look very distinguished’. ‘Surely you mean extinguished,’ he replied.

Joel Schumacher on the surprising & frightening opening of the "Politically incorrect" 'Falling Down' (1993) & how it impacted American culture: "When we first showed it to an audience, the marketing people at Warner Bros, predicted we’d get sixty to a hundred walkouts because people would not tolerate that kind of politically incorrect tone in a him. No one left. They cheered. That was one of the most surprising, most frightening things for me. When Michael Douglas walked into that Korean grocery store and started beating this guy the audience cheered. When he took a baseball bat to the street gang they cheered. When he took out the gun in the Wham Burger, which is my favorite scene in the movie, there was pandemonium to create that kind of response. At the same time, that wasn’t the point of the movie. 'Falling Down' became a news story in itself. It was on the cover of Newsweek. Ebbe’s script had touched a nerve in the culture. There was a lot of ink in those days about the fading white middle-class American male, which is what the Newsweek cover story was about. They used Michael’s character in the film as an example of that. That’s some of what the movie was about also. There was endless debate, some of it pro and some of it con, about whether Michael Douglas’s character was the good guy or the bad guy. Not for one minute did Michael or I ever think he was the good guy. We always knew he was the bad guy. He’s a man who winds up on the end of a pier waving a loaded gun at his ex-wife and child." No one left. They cheered. That was one of the most surprising, most frightening things for me. When Michael Douglas walked into that Korean grocery store and started beating this guy the audience cheered. When he took a baseball bat to the street gang they cheered. When he took out the gun in the Wham Burger, which is my favorite scene in the movie, there was pandemonium to create that kind of response. At the same time, that wasn’t the point of the movie. 'Falling Down' became a news story in itself. It was on the cover of Newsweek. Ebbe’s script had touched a nerve in the culture. There was a lot of ink in those days about the fading white middle-class American male, which is what the Newsweek cover story was about. They used Michael’s character in the film as an example of that. That’s some of what the movie was about also. There was endless debate, some of it pro and some of it con, about whether Michael Douglas’s character was the good guy or the bad guy. Not for one minute did Michael or I ever think he was the good guy. We always knew he was the bad guy. He’s a man who winds up on the end of a pier waving a loaded gun at his ex-wife and child."
