In 1962, following a tour with the British SAS, Charlie Beckwith wrote a paper proposing the U.S. Army create a counterterrorist unit based on his experience with the 22 Special Air Service. In late 1975, after commanding Project Delta in Vietnam and following a series of terrorist attacks in Europe, he was asked to dig that paper out for a meeting in Washington, D.C. Later, at an August 1976 conference at Fort Benning, Georgia, a plan to establish what would become one of the most elite counterterrorist units in the world began to take shape. The following year, in December of 1977, Colonel Beckwith returned to the JFK Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina from a trip to Europe where he was meeting with the SAS and German GSG 9. John Lincoln Clem — one of the youngest soldiers to ever serve in the U.S. Army. Born in Ohio in 1851. His mother was killed in a train accident in 1861. Two years later, at age 9, he tried to enlist in the Union Army and was turned away for being too small. He didn’t go home. He followed the 22nd Michigan anyway and became their unofficial drummer boy. The men took him in and paid him from their own pockets. Shiloh, 1862: artillery fire tore his drum apart. From then on, they called him “Johnny Shiloh.” He officially enlisted in 1863 as a musician. Chickamauga, age 12: during the Union retreat, a Confederate officer reportedly ordered him to surrender. Clem fired a sawed-off musket and made it back to Union lines through the chaos. Gen. George H. Thomas later promoted him to sergeant, making him one of the youngest non-commissioned officers in Army history. Newspapers dubbed him the “Drummer Boy of Chickamauga.” He was wounded, captured, exchanged, and mustered out at just 13. Most kids would be done. Clem wasn’t. Ulysses S. Grant later helped him secure a commission. Clem stayed in the Army for decades in quartermaster roles, rising steadily through the ranks. He retired in 1915 as a brigadier general. In 1942, Clark Gable's wife, Carole Lombard, passed away in an airplane crash. He was emotionally and physically devastated, and decided to join the Army Air Force. Although he was beyond the draft age at the time the U.S. entered World War II, he enlisted as a private in the Army Air Force on Aug. 12, 1942, at Los Angeles. He attended the Officers' Candidate School at Miami Beach, Florida, and graduated as a second lieutenant on Oct. 28. He then attended aerial gunnery school and in February 1943, on personal orders from Gen. Hap Arnold, went to England to make a motion picture about aerial gunners in action. He was assigned to the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook, and although neither ordered nor expected to do so, flew operational missions over Europe in B-17s to obtain the combat film footage he believed was required for producing the movie, titled "Combat America." Gable returned to the U.S. in October 1943 and was relieved from active duty as a major on June 12, 1944, at his own request, since he was over-age for combat. Because his motion picture production schedule made it impossible for him to fulfill his AAF Reserve officer duties, he resigned his commission on Sept. 26, 1947. Two years after the death of his wife, Clark joined Irene Dunne to launch the USS Carole Lombard, in honor of Carole and her dedication to her country. In 2007, a Spanish comedian named Juan Joya Borja sat down for a television interview in Seville, Spain and tried to tell a story about the time he worked as a kitchen porter at a beach restaurant. When he became seriously ill in 2020 and needed his leg amputated, fans who had never met him raised over fourteen thousand euros for his medical care and a wheelchair. He sent a video thanking them. John Carpenter on how Howard Hawks's "Rio Bravo" (1959) inspired him to become a filmmaker: "As I got older I began to see that certain directors did certain things. One of the earliest examples of this was Roger Corman. I started going to see these exciting, fast, kind of cheesy but really fun monster movies, and there was one name that kept coming up on the screen: Roger Corman. 'It Conquered the World' (1956), 'Not of This Earth' (1957), 'Attack of the Crab Monsters' (1957), 'The Undead' (1957)... But | really understood for the first time what a director did when I saw 'Rio Bravo' in 1959. There was something about that movie that was like home and I can't really explain it. It was held over in Bowling Green for three or four weeks in a row because people kept coming to see it. I abandoned to see what was new in the other movie house in town to see this movie every weekend again and again because there was something in it that was different from the other westerns I had seen. I had certainly seen John Wayne before. He had become a part of my growing-up experience. He was the action guy, the cowboy. He was the guy in 'Flying Tigers' (1942) who was flying the airplanes. So what was so different about that movie? Then I became aware of this credit: “Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo.” I looked at the poster and I said to myself, “Who is this guy? He didn't write the movie and he wasn't starring in it so why is his name up here? And why is he last in the credits?” All these things started to occur to me, but it was the emotional impact of the film that got me to start using my brain. Please spare a thought for Michael Ward, who was born on this day (yesterday, sorry Michael!) in Carnmenellis, Cornwall in 1909. Michael was the very first actor I plucked up the courage to contact for an interview, way back in April 1989. He’d recently celebrated his 80’s birthday yet was wheelchair bound, had no family and had basically been forgotten about by the industry. As well as getting my interview we became firm friends and I kind of looked after him for the last eight years of his life. Every Sunday I’d arrive at his flat in Maida Vale and take him to my mum’s place where we’d have lunch and watch videos of some of the films he was in. Apart from the odd television repeat I don’t think he’d really seen himself on TV much and as the memories came flooding back he’d reel off story after story. One of my last memories of Michael happened shortly before he died in 1997. He’d decided to grow a beard and when I saw him I said something along the lines of, ‘My word, you look very distinguished’. ‘Surely you mean extinguished,’ he replied.

There was a lot of ink in those days about the fading white middle-class American male, which is what the Newsweek cover story was about. They used Michael’s character in the film as an example of that. That’s some of what the movie was about also. There was endless debate, some of it pro and some of it con, about whether Michael Douglas’s character was the good guy or the bad guy. Not for one minute did Michael or I ever think he was the good guy. We always knew he was the bad guy. He’s a man who winds up on the end of a pier waving a loaded gun at his ex-wife and child." Danny Trejo recalls meeting Charles Manson in jail years before Manson became one of America's most infamous criminals. Chris: You met Charles Manson in prison. What was he like?
