Why did John HAVE to include this in the Easter story 😭

The hidden gem: "Are you going to deny this as well, Peter?" 🤣🤣

@JoelJammal Also... this 😆

What's relevant and interesting about the point of John getting there first is he hesitates outside the tomb while Peter immediately goes in with no hesitation. It shows Peter has lost all doubt and is finally ready to fulfill his purpose

John makes Peter feel like he’s Simon, again.😂🤣

John was a real one.

Eriugena a says it’s to symbolize reason vs faith: reason (John) can reach the theshhold of the tomb on its own, but faith (Peter) must enter first

This is one of the things in the Bible that nigh on prove it’s real. Another subtle hint are all the duplicate names; like Mary, James, and John. If the stories were all made up, there would be zero duplicates. The more I read the Bible, the more untangled it becomes. I love reading the Old Testament and connecting its stories to the New Testament, like Psalm 22, and Isaiah, especially 47, and 53.

Why are you men fighting? Mary Magdalene got there first 🤦♀️

If the last thing you did before Jesus died was deny him 3 times you would be dragging your feet towards his resurrection a bit too.

This is the ancient version of shotgun😂

'Are you gonna deny this as well Peter..?' - Sick burn!!

Why? Here’s what Grok said: John’s Gospel drops this vivid race detail for good reason: • John was younger and faster — simple human touch. • They ran in shock and hope. John arrives first but pauses; bold Peter bursts in. Shows their personalities. • John (the author) proves the tomb wasn’t touched until Peter got there. • Humble personal flex that feels real and builds to his belief. The Greek word for “running” screams emotional urgency after the crucifixion.

@RebeccaRoseGold My internal dialogue, every Easter…brought to life. Thank you.

It’s such a perfect line. It works on so many different levels, from a silly brotherly jab at Peter, all the way to profoundly theological. I tend to believe all the interpretations. The silly interpretations humanize the writing, these are real people with real personalities on display. And simultaneously it provides theological and historical insight: John arrives first but did not enter, showing deference to Peter *even* as Peter was not counted as one of the disciples in that moment (“the disciples, and Peter”). This is another reason John wrote that he arrived first. This shows John’s love and zeal for Christ, but also his obedience and humility to what Christ taught (that Peter is the rock, even in that moment where Peter was not counted as a disciple). And John dared not enter without a witness, and that when he did enter, “he saw and believed”. This is critical. While at the tomb, seeing inside but not yet entering, even John did not yet believe. Only after entering did he see the linens, and then fully believed. In that moment with Peter, John understood that this was greater than what had happened to Lazarus, that the nature of the linens and the folded head cloth made it clear that Christ resurrected into a glorified immortal body, the linens gave testimony to that (remember that John and Peter were witness at the transfiguration). Peter enters with boldness and authority, with John as his witness. This silly line about running, which is one of the funniest lines in the Bible, is also the thread that holds together these beautiful theological insights about the nature of belief in the resurrection.

Nobody’s talking about the “you gonna deny that too?” Line 😂😭

“Peter, you are the rock. You are slower.” 😂😂

@ChavuraStephen Love your work 😂

Hilarious. To answer your question, perhaps because Peter, though running to see, was hesitant to face Him if he was there. Guilt & a heavy heart will always slow you down when you're running back to Jesus after failing Him. Take your eyes off yourself & your past & just run.

I grew up going to church every Sunday till my confirmation and have pretty much stopped going since. But whenever I see a good bible joke I’m glad I went as long as I did cuz this is hilarious 😂

😂 "Are you gonna deny this as well, Peter?!" Ooh! Cruel!

I think it is because his gospel is the last one written out of the four and he was filling in details that he knew people needed to know (and probably kept asking him about lol)

Explainer: The two sets of brothers were competitive from the fishing business days in Galilee, no biggy, Sons of Zebedee & their Mum probably a little miffed when Peter scored the Rock gig so friendly rivalry continued, John milked it One Jesus loved Last Supper couch scene etc, they’re human beings, bit of a laugh, keeps it real 😁

@nnnanceee Funny, and especially so because the women got there before either one of them! 😂

lol - that's hilarious - FYI - Jesus loves everybody.

A funny skit. But the "Gospel of John" was written anonymously, and the name of 'John' was added to it as a title more than a hundred years later.

What's hilarious is this is true. John's personality really comes out here.

Peter and John, later, in front of Jesus: “ So, Jesus, who won?” Jesus: “I will answer your question with another question. What do you think I meant when I said ‘So the last will be first, and the first last’?”

The gospels weren’t written by any of Jesus’ actual disciples

@devanslesley “What, you going to deny this too?” 🤣🤣🤣

I don’t know if John was just petty or a troll, but getting to meet him in Heaven is on my priority list. He must’ve been funny 😂

Imagine how many more kids would go to church on Sunday if a preacher read that passage out loud and asked: “Now why would he have written that?” and thrown out perfectly human reasons as well as nobler possibilities. 😂

My theory: John had some sort of eidetic/photographic memory going on. It’s not just that John remembered different things; his entire faculty of memory seems different from his peers. He doesn’t just recount the teaching of Jesus, but entire conversations Jesus had decades ago. He’ll have weird details on the date, time of day, where people were standing, sequence or events, numbers and placement of objects, etc. etc. For example, this selection of John 18 reads like a human security cam feed. His best friend and mentor is about to get murdered by the government, but these are the details he remembers.

Why not blow your own trumpet? Peter can write whatever he wants in his Epsitles. John took his opportunity to let everyone know he was faster than Peter.

Because it actually matters. It's about the response to the messenger, the action taken and the arrival to confirm the message as witness. It's about who would stand as witness and the prophetic implication after that. It matters a lot.

lol
