Why did my computers fans just spin up? You might have asked yourself that question. And you might have opened Task Manager, but it was too late. With TaskSlinger, you can find out! It stores up to 12 hours of history (configurable) and lets you see what actually happened...

Use it in conjunction with "Close to tray" and "Start with Windows" for best results!

Love it, but could you add a feature to suspend a specific thread in a process? Photoshop has a bug, so I need to do it manually with a script because Task Slinger cannot suspend by thread ID.

Will do!

Your app and filepilot are the greatest things that ever happened to windows in recent years. I use them as replacement and cannot express how happy I am

Trying it now.. looking really nice! Is there a way I could change the title of "Context Switch Delta" to something shorter since I can't make that col narrower? Maybe just a ∆ ?

Hi Thomas! Thank for awesome work! I love TaskSlinger, it's incredible how you can make thing that works better than native Windows application! I found that after a while running in the background on performance tab it freezes updates.

@thomasklemenc Sound's like a daft question but going to ask it anyways 😂 sometimes my fans just spin up randomly how do I know what caused this. How do I check with your program?.

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

No worries! Basically you leave TaskSlinger running in the background, and after your fans were spinning, you use the history to check what process/app caused the CPU spike. In the example video, you can see that I scrub to a spike, and in the list below it shows that Binary Ninja was using a lot of CPU, so that would have been the cause in my case.

Seeing this, how effeciently it is stored and how fast it is brings back those "wow, how??" memories when netdata came out initially, with this insanely compressed data that was super fast

Could you honor the Settings > Accessibility > Text size scale factor? You already have Appearance > UI Scale, seems like maybe it could incorporate it or use that instead as that's the official way apps should scale text.

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

Do you mean to just move the UI scale menu item into Settings > Accessibility, or a separate text size setting?

"Why did my computers fans just spin up?" 99% of the time, it's because I opened an instagram tab.

This is a great idea. Based on his recent post about a memory leak, and the comments he made about the app it was in, I wonder if @davepl1968 is working on something similar.

Can you put an option to default to other tabs. Like Performance ,Services .... And in the Performance tab , Cpu ,Ram,Gpu and others, a setting to lock in place cause it's easy to move them by mistake. Thx

I have a question. On my PC #claude was suddenly gone and I could not start a new instance, because some mysterious other programm was accessing it. (I expect a failed, but forced update). Is there a way in #Taskslinger to find out which programms might prevent starting a programm or which programm may hav a connection open to a given exe file?

what FPS is this running at, it's causing flickering on my Alienware 3423DWF when the window is in focus, this is usually caused by a VRR mismatch.

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

Mostly at 1 fps, unless animations are running. You need to set an exception for this app for Gsync/Freesync

デビルズ・シャドウ😈 的头像
デビルズ・シャドウ😈1 个月前

yeah, with animations off, it only flickers once per graph update, with it on it flickers a lot. Sadly I have an nvidia GPU and can't turn gsync off on a per-app basis. Forcing option in attached image to "fixed refresh rate" causes my entire monitor to switch when launching

デビルズ・シャドウ😈 的头像
デビルズ・シャドウ😈1 个月前

fixed, had to use nvidia profile inspector to force gsync off for taskslinger.

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

So strange, I've only heard this twice now. I also have an NVIDIA card, and a gsync monitor (gsync is on), never had this issue. I know NVIDIA hardcodes certain things for certain games/apps, I'll try to find out if I can ask them to add TaskSlinger to the non-gsync list lol. @grok can you research this?

デビルズ・シャドウ😈 的头像

can you check whether your flip-model swapchain uses DXGI_SWAP_CHAIN_FLAG_ALLOW_TEARING / DXGI_PRESENT_ALLOW_TEARING? Checked changelog and 0.8.4 introduced flip-model presentation. Removing tearing capability or providing a composed presentation fallback seems worth testing

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

I am trying the thing grok proposed. Creating an application profile for TaskSlinger with VRR_APP_OVERRIDE_FORCE_OFF. This seems to be what other similar apps (like SpecialK/SKIF) are doing to fix this. It seems to be connected with having Gsync on for windowed apps (default is full screen only) My only issue is I can not actually reproduce the problem locally, so I can only add it but not really test if it has the desired effect. It will be added in the next couple releases.

if it's any help I'll gladly run a test build on my end to validate the fix before public release

Network use shows 0 in the per-process columns, but overall info shows up in graphs. What's up? Running elevated. Built-in task manager shows process-specific network use fine

Max Lindblad 的头像

Of course, all my machines. Are you saying the tool doesn't properly work on the last reasonably ok Windows?

Thomas Klemenc 的头像
Thomas Klemenc1 个月前

Windows 11 (24H2+) made it a lot easier to get network details per process. But the next version will have it working on Windows 10 too.

Max Lindblad 的头像
Max Lindblad1 个月前

Ok, good to know. Might be a good time to also check if you can get GPU usage on the performance tab working? It is only showing data on the "processes" tab. For parity with Win10 task manager, getting individual GPU curves like video encoding use, compute use would be 5/5
