Why did Quake even die, this game is peak

Wayy to high of a skill gap for gaming in 2025. Also young kids dont have the drive nor want to take the time you have to put in to be good at the great FPS game ever made. Theres a reason every newer game has very little skills gaps sadly🥲

I hope that's not the real reason cuz gaming gonna become pretty boring if that's the case 😬

arena shooters have unfortunately faded out, and battle royals and extraction shooters is what’s popular right now. I much rather prefer arena shooters but times change sadly.

extraction definitely seems to be doing very well atm but i feel like BR has been fading away a couple of years now

BR is definitely on the decline but it’s still a very popular genre between the established ones. Any new BR will probably have trouble getting players but ones like fortnite, pubg, warzone, and even apex still hold a strong player base.

There are some good multiplayer games, there is only one great one though and its sad therell never be anything better or at least onpar with Quake or Unreal Tournament.

whoaa that's a lot of hours!

Yeah it's really underrated, but limited to 4v4 with no interesting modes, there just isn't much reason for people to care enough to play, even with awesome base movement and weapons. Quake Champions could have been one of the best games ever, if they handled it better.

quake 3 arena was the best

Quake never died still has huge tournaments and colt following

Player numbers are low tho :/

The entire genre is predicated on the willingness of new players to learn before becoming competent. It’s not a generational thing, plenty of “good” older FPS players I’ve known have fun for ten minutes, get owned by someone who knows what they’re doing and subsequently quit.

Quake Champions was awesome. But, I can easily tell you why it died. You boot the game, wait 5 minutes to find a match. Get in the match. Play for 10 minutes. Get back to the main menu forced to view the store, battle pass unlock spend money menus. Queue for 5 minutes. Play for 10. Every time you have fun you are ripped out of it to view the main menu and queue again. In that 5 minutes the shooter trance magic disappears and you ask yourself... What am I doing with my life. Close the game. Boot up Old School Runescape.

The arena shooter died when consoles came along. Halo (slow arena shooter) and then COD. Quake III Arena was peak for me. With UT2k4

tried to provide an answer, tldr id Software deserves more shame

it's a big shame. if it's not them, i truly wish we will see something similar rise into popularity again. Which would be really hard to pull off. Not only in terms of getting people to play it but to have the game be as good with movement, weapons etc.

1) New gamers come in. 2) They are instantly thrown to veterans who have been playing Quake for 20+ years (there are no "middle ground" players). 3) They spend several matches getting obliterated in seconds with little to no chance of learning something. 4) They leave.

Same thing that happened to RTS' in my opinion. It's dominated by people who have been playing the genre for 20+ years, newer players don't stand a chance and eventually stop playing or don't buy the game to begin with.

you have to aim + be good

if there was a lot of players you wouldn't have to :/

@BalanceBF dood....the movement on quake was unparalleled

@moon1valorant @BalanceBF You say this but people playing CoD are doing exactly this.

@yamnex673 @BalanceBF whats worse about COD, is that it probably takes you 8 hours to get top tier 'aim'..so that every battle is a 50/50 jump auto-aim garbage duel. Quake + CS takes thousands of hours to get marginal gains on your aim + movement.

love that this post is doing numbers. quake one of my all time favs

i wasn't expecting it to blow up but i'm glad it did

try insta gib it's so fun i like getting clips on that game mode

@BalanceBF Finding matches on anything besides tdm is so damn hard bro yesterday i selected uht instagib impulse 9 and it took like 40 minutes to find a game

@mikuhater123 @BalanceBF damn :( maybe try weekends the quakers might be more active

the OG this is based on, Quake 3 Arena

Its too simple for modern gamers I think.

heroes being a thing at all killing the old population + the usual quake skill gap stomping out interested new players

Because everybody is on equal ground and you can't abuse unintended movement glitches to spawncamp.

People are still making banger Quake 1 maps.

Dota 2 ruined other games for me. Nothing compares.

Dota and League are the type of games that are really hard to get into in my opinion but once you are hooked you are hooked hard. i've tried both like an hour and watched multiple tutorials and didn't get it at all :/

@Slim_Sizzle Dota is diffrent. You can actually leave league. DOTA on the other hand... That's Dota.

@TravisOuttaHell @BalanceBF Na Dota is way better. League isnt for me. I like depth in my games.

Ppl like easy games

Quake is great but it's hard to get into. The so-called "movement" players should be playing it, but this just proves that the average player prefers to think they're good in an easy game.

I've never been one to say "I can't learn this game because its too old and the community is too good" I've picked up many old fighting games that have 20 year vets and been fine. Quake Champions is the exception. When you play this game when its at lower playercount... GL...

Crazy thing is this game would probably thrive in this adderal driven FPS world. At the same time those same people would complain how slow it is 🤣

due to being niche most active afps players are really high skilled which makes it harder for new players to learn since there's less novice/intermediate players for them to learn with, and it becomes a playerbase death spiral

Man, I wish I got into quake back in the dreamcast days. There were so many good freakin games, it was damn near impossible to lock in on just one. I need to just play it. Pretty sure its in my steam library somewhere

Barely any releases. Most people I know that still play arena shooters play Q3, because modern iterations apparently changed too much. They are fun, but as any other PvP only game, the skill ceiling is inifinitely high and it is not casual friendly.

What if I told you, you never had a choice of what games you love. Only what games got the most promotion and “timing” in the market

I love battlefield and it wasn't promotion nor marketing that got me into it but i see your point :D

lol I was just trying to say something cool that alludes to the fact we all had the same childhood for a reason 😅

Shit, i'm sorry for ruining your moment xd

It didn't, nothing ever dies it just gets forgotten about. I'm finding creative ways to make gaming more accessible. Using AI to minimize scripts, this game looks amazing but runs I'm one html page. This is min maxing. This is the future imo.

it died bc its too self-similar, it didnt continue to evolve its an arena shooter where you run around the map and collect guns / ammo / armor / health once you have some of the better guns or more hp/ac, its far more difficult to defeat you in combat the matches tend to snowball after one player dominates the spawn timing bc of this, if you dont know the level layout, spawn location and constantly run around to the most important items, you will lose its too one sided once ppl began to optimize, it lost the fun if there is a significant skill gap for one player, either they get obliterated have have a terrible time or they are leagues better than all the other players and easily destroy everyone else and the majority of players have an awful time it never rly got a balance rework, it was just the same game forever even sequels werent rly different its one example where listening to the fans: 'they're saying just give us more of the same, dont touch it its perfect, more!' was the wrong approach and nearly killed all fps games for a while

There is no way for new players to start playing. Every match feels like you are against god-tier pros and because of that there is no way to practice and become better.

From what I gathered, the lack of SBMM had noobs getting curb stomped by quake gods. That and you have to actually be good at the game and not rely on gimmick movement.

“Dreams back to 1997 and QuakeWorld” QW + mIRC = those where the days. Clan 9 vs Deathrow in what started the very notion of eSports Man those days were great

Because everyone got used to the compressed skillgap of modern gaming. Even as someone who good at FPS games, I got wrecked more often than not in Quake Champions lol

The first time I got so many kills it the announcer went "HOLY SHIT" when I was a kid, I laughed so hard I cried. I almost hyperventilated. It's like a core memory for me lol
