Aziz Sergeyevich Shavershian — Congenital heart defect (undiagnosed cardiomyopathy), cardiac arrest. Rich Piana — Heart disease (enlarged heart); collapsed and died after coma. Greg Plitt — Traumatic accident (struck by a train during filming). Dallas McCarver — Choking (food asphyxiation); underlying heart enlargement noted. Mike Mentzer — Heart attack (cardiac complications). Shawn Rhoden — Heart attack. Andreas Münzer — Multi-organ failure due to extreme performance-enhancing drug use (notably liver failure). Franco Columbu — Drowned after a medical event (suspected heart-related issue while swimming). Sergio Oliva — Kidney failure. Cedric McMillan — Heart attack. Nasser El Sonbaty — Kidney failure leading to complications. George Peterson III — Sudden cardiac event; autopsy noted cardiovascular issues. John Meadows — Pulmonary embolism (blood clot), with prior heart disease history. Most common cause of death in bodybuilding Across professional bodybuilding, the dominant pattern is: Cardiovascular disease (heart-related issues) This includes: Heart attacks Cardiac arrest Cardiomegaly (enlarged heart) Arrhythmias Why this is common (high-level factors) Long-term use of anabolic-androgenic steroids and other PEDs Extreme body mass (bulking phases strain the heart) Low body fat + dehydration during contest prep High blood pressure and cholesterol issues Diuretics and other contest drugs Genetic predisposition (often overlooked) Bottom line While deaths vary (accidents, kidney failure, embolism), cardiovascular complications are by far the most frequent and consistent cause among bodybuilders.

Drugs. Definitely not a representation of health and fitness, quite the opposite. Sickness and addiction

Obviously this is a cherry-picked group of people that died young and happened to be bodybuilders. I could make a list like this of chess players.

Sergio Oliva was 71 when he died. His wife shot him multiple times in his stomach, and he survived. However he later died of kidney failure. I doubt the bullets helped

Steroids

Oliva and Columbo lived good lives. Dying in your 70s isn’t exactly young.

Because they cranked it up to eleven.

Bodybuilding isn’t the problem—extremes are. Heavy steroid use, diuretics, and pushing massive size put huge strain on the heart → leading to cardiac issues, organ damage, and early deaths. Natural training = safe. Extreme enhancement = risky.

Steroids…not sure what answer you’re looking for. Even the guys in the video would agree.

My granny took shots of whisky, smoked camel’s no filter, and lived to be 95

Extreme PED use Massive strain on the heart and organs Dehydration and extreme cutting practices

HGH makes your whole body grow. Your head and your heart. Plus, you end up with way more weight than you should have on your frame. Enlarged heart, forced to work too hard. It’s explodes.

Of course people will want to say steroids, but one of these guys was hit by a train, several were heavy drug abusers (meth, cocaine), one died of arrhythmia that was likely not steroid, another had an aneurysm.

Piana was taking over 20 oxys per day... they say he was dead before he hit the floor. Dallas McCarver choked on a chicken breast... sad! That kid was well on his way!

Franco and Sergio were in their 70s when they died. That is not very young. It’s a normal lifespan.

Bodybuilders die young and use steroids therefore I’m excused from so much as coming remotely close to lifting weights to the point of discomfort

Franco lived to 78 and Sergio to 71. In general for the rest, all of their hearts were blown out by anabolic steriods. It's going to be interesting to see what the long term effects of testosterone given to youth transitioning from female to male in this country shall be.

The steroids that make all of your muscles bigger… Also make your heart and your liver freaking huge… Could be ripped like a mad man for a few years… And then you get to die

There's nothing healthy about traditional bodybuilding. Humans aren't meant to live with extremely low body fat and oversized muscles; that's the main myth the field sells.
