Why did the elephant intervene?

Probably because being kind-hearted and protective of the weak comes naturally to elephants.

Maybe her calf was around & she just didn't want the tiger anywhere near.

A tiger is a potential threat for elephant calves and it's in the elephant's interests to have fewer of those around, maybe?

It must be protecting it’s young

Having both predators Wild Dhols and Tiger around it unsettled the Elephant..and it wanted nothing to do with both as it showed it's displeasure.. basically saying Bhag yaha se..
