Why did Toyota launch Lexus?
10 条评论

In 1983, Toyota embarked on an initiative to penetrate the U.S. luxury car market, a domain traditionally dominated by European manufacturers. This effort was spearheaded by Toyota's chairman, Eiji Toyoda, who issued a challenge to his company: create the world's best car. This ambitious project, codenamed "F1," aimed to develop a luxury sedan that could rival the finest offerings from Europe and America. In 1986, Toyota's longstanding advertising partner, Saatchi & Saatchi, established Team One, a dedicated unit to manage the marketing for this new venture. Additionally, the image consulting firm Lippincott & Margulies was tasked with developing a brand name, which resulted in a shortlist of 219 prospective names, including Vectre, Verone, Chaparel, Calibre, and Alexis. Alexis emerged as a favorite but was seen as too human-centric, potentially due to its association with the character Alexis Carrington from the television show "Dynasty." To adapt, the name was modified by dropping the first letter and replacing 'i' with 'u,' thus creating the name "Lexus."
