Why does helluva boss have such a dark tone compared to hazbin hotel

Hazbin Hotel's main character is an optimist who wants to redeem sinners whereas Helluva Boss is about an oppressed imp being an assassin. The premises themselves are wildly different in tone.

Because Brandon Rogers handled Blitz' writing for his most emotional episodes, not Viv. Like you can tell what's Brandon's episodes because of how horrific they are compared to Blitz running his mouth about fucking all the time.

Because Helluva boss is based around the struggles of the Hellborn and Hazbin is focused around the reception of the sinners

A. No corporate meddling B. I wouldn't exactly call genocide, rape/sexual assault, mass brain washing, and physical abuse "light". There's dark in Hazbin, it's just more glossed over.

Hazbin is about big concepts but Helluva is about smaller more personal stories. Naturally the personal stories are more impactful as we care more about the characters.

The thing is Hazbin doesn't actually have lighter themes. Angel Dust alone is a walking trauma dump at this point. But HB has a smaller cast that is the focus of the show rather than the big story of Hazbin. So when dark things are explored with HB characters, they hit harder.

There are many insightful comments already, but I'd like to add one more theory: HB is more about internal conflict, HH more about external. The dark themes in HH are genocide, war and rape, in HB it's guilt and self-loathing. You could even say that Blitzø is his own antagonist.

Hazbin Hotel is a 4Kids version of Helluva Boss and with different plot.

Hazbin Hotel is more so about facing your hardships and doing something about it. Helluva is about finding love and happiness despite everything going wrong around you. And sharing making a better future after a troubling past

It's always been better, which isn't saying much because hazbin hotel is genuinely utter dog shit, but it is better. Was actually on a trajectory of being legitimately good before season 2 came out🥴

I interpret it as hazbin uses heavy subject to enrich the plot, while helluva boss uses heavy subjects to enrich the characters and their development. Both do it well just in different ways

I think Hazbin doesn't have enough episodes to focus on the characters' lore and stuff

I think we will have a tone like that in a future season, problably in the one with Lilith or Roo✨

Smaller Cast, More Episodes than 8 a season. If Amazon was Smart, they'd give Hazbin twice as many episodes, that are needed to tell the story.

bc one has a LOT of wiggle room to explore its characters compared to the other. hazbin was originally going to have 12 episodes in the first season but amazon cut it down. ~176minutes is not a lot of time to fully explore 10+ unique characters while also progressing its story

maybe because it's not an Amazon owned show. maybe because Viv has FULL creative authority with no external company trying to make the show as marketable as possible.

HbH addresses the topics of genocide, military propaganda, dictatorship, rape, mental abuse and more, I don't think it's by any means a less dark show.

yeah this scene spacifically is heart wrenching! but personally i see the stuff with hazbin hotel as worse in concept. but less so in execution.. like.. valentino.... or well. vox in life! mainly val though.

I don't even know how to answer that? Heck I just watch the show to see how far it goes like a normal fan does when there into a show they enjoy

With less characters at play, Helluva Boss has more of a tight focus. Not to say that all characters are fleshed out or consistent, but I feel Helluva Boss's writing is better for the centralized narrative. >

Why both shows are shit with so much potential? That's the real question.

Idk man the ending of Hazbin s2e6 was pretty dark, they both have their silly and darker moments depending on the episode

I've also noticed it has a more crass humor to it compared to Hazbin. I used to think it was because Brandon Rogers was in it & that's the humor he specializes in, but when someone pointed out that Hazbin is about redemption & Helluva is about the opposite, it hit me.
