This revolution evolved into a four-year armed struggle between the National Liberation Front, the country's largest anti-colonial movement, and the British Empire. It resulted in the permanent expulsion of British military forces from Yemen and the dismantling of the crown colony of Aden. The last colonial soldier left Yemen on November 30, 1967, paving the way for the official proclamation of the People's Republic of South Yemen. In 1969, it became the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, the only Marxist-Leninist state to have ever existed in the Arab world.
