But then I hear from so many women that their male partners exclusively open up to them, and rely on them for all of their emotional support. So men are comfortable burdening their partners but have to respect their friends by not burdening them. That's messed up.

My family (across genders) are so obsessed with not bothering anyone my great-grandma gave birth in silence because she didn't want to interrupt the doctor and her husband having coffee in the next room. He said, "I guess I'll check on the patient!" and she was holding a baby.

Holy shit I realized this but never articulated it this well. I had to share some sad personal news with family and friends recently. They started crying. This made me feel like a monster. I felt like I was spreading my sadness, like I passed on a disease.

As a woman with a SUPER sensitive brother who loves deep talk and gets actively hype and jumps around when we get into the real shit I'd also say: even with that kind of dude this societal shit is so strong you have to hang out for like six hours before an actual conversation.

Why should I tell you anything about my personal life when you're just going to tell me to harden up and be a better man? Lemme save myself the trouble, thx.

I agree with this. I actually had a buddy call me out because I didn’t tell him my daughter was in the hospital for a major surgery until after the fact. We can take that shit too far sometimes.

This is accurate Especially during long hang outs, but another aspect is that, we genuinely get a lot of joy from just chilling and doing simple stuff like naming athletes from the 80s and 90s for hours on end. So why stop the fun to talk about the daily grind stuff.

Men are shamed for expressing their emotions, "toxic masculinity" is not just a buzzword or something that harms only women, it harms men too. It makes a world where men are expected to be stoic robots instead of people.
