We were taught as children that the sap from fig trees and particularly, unripe figs was caustic and could cause burns on skin. Also to avoid touching it and then rubbing our eyes.

Used to use it all the time at work (science) - it isn't that expensive. The beauty industry probably uses vast amounts of the stuff though - it's an enzyme, you only need tiny amounts
