Why Flying BREAKS Superhero Games
58 Kommentare

If it could be done it would’ve been done before is one of the dumbest fucking things I’ve ever heard

You point out the flavorful exaggeration because you cannot argue every valid point that precedes it, sit down lmao

@theSeattleHomer Well now someone is hoing prove your ass wrong.

@theSeattleHomer “Hoing” Open the schools!!

Saying this when flying Drones and Fighter Jests isn't the coolest thing ever

Why is everyone illiterate?

The webslinging point was so stupid, you can literally press and hold the websling button in EVERY spiderman game and it automatically swings you around just like it would if it were in the movies/show. Theres no calculations or angles.

Not in Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Web of Shadows. Not my fault you don’t think when you play games

@JJ20069 He was showing and talking about insomniac, which is agreed by the public to have the most fun web swinging even when it’s easy, proving it has nothing to do with the calculations swinging is just satisfying and cool

@JJ20069 Calculations aren’t difficult. It’s about choices. Most people do more to swing around because it’s fun and they HAVE TO to get places quick. You guys saw “calculations” and assumed “difficult” when I’m just talking about choices to think about SUBCONSCIOUSLY BTW while moving

man shut up

Breathe water

This is just a stupid and ignorant take. Ace Combat doesn't have a fuel system. It's great flying and dog fights. The leak makes it look basically like that, but with the ability to go in for melee combat too. Like, it's legit just ace combat scaled down.

Anthem's flying was great. The cooling mechanic with water gives you an excuse to get close to obstacles, and have to plot a route between them on the fly to keep your speed up. Flying to a site was always a favorite part. Just needed a couple more things to do.

Holy fuck just shut the fuck upppppp, just cause yall dont see the fun in having a pure flight in a game then thats YOUUUU so many people have been begging for a game with pure flight. Your excuse being because people wouldnt care about level design makes 0 fucking sense cause guess what just fill the world with things to do that would make someone stop flying and stop to interact with the world like yall are such closed minded people

False. The new armored core game is amazing and thats all about flying. They just need to figure out the combat.

Counterpoint

Theres countless games with flying mechanics that are fantastic. The shot is ge talking about?

Cool, that’s not what I’m talking about.

The same fundamental mechanism/designs from flying games can translate to super hero games. Flying traversal like walking traversal just needs moments of interest. Youre just fundamentally wrong, flying is already a solved problem for being fun in games.

That’s also not what I said. I said a “great flying superhero game is impossible.” Exaggerative, sure. Nobody has given me a good reason why it’d be simple.

Youre entire argument is that traversal cant be fun with flying. Its literally been done in countless games going back to the 80s flying is a solved problem. Just cause YOU would have bad design solutions doesnt mean flying HAS to be bad. Go play more games with flight mechanics

I never said flying can’t be fun, actually. You should watch the video again.

Ive only argued against what you said dude.

Bros never drove one of these in GTA Online

I think there are some non-superhero games that give the same feeling. in Just Cause 4 you basically have limitless flight :D

People always say this, but Gravity Rush came out 10 years ago and did just that. An actual super hero action open world game where you can freely fly and explore a massive city. Multiple cities actually, and it's a great game! But nobody bought it!

Traversal is only as fun as the player makes it. I just finished replays of SM1 and MM and sure there are times im actively using the mechanics to go as fast as i can or weaving between buildings but u can just R2 R2 R2 down a street which is identical to the "flying problem"

Which is why Insomniacs webswinging is the weakest of the physics based Spider-Man games. Because it’s the closest to flying, which is kinda my point.

Every single spider-man game u can just go thru the motions with swinging, u have to choose to make it fun. Id argue batman arkhams traversal proves ur point better because gliding and choosing where to grapple is necessary. In SM any idiot can go point a to b w/o touching ground

It’s not about difficulty or touching the ground. It’s about giving the player a consistent stream of decisions to make during traversal because progress is predicated on interacting with the environment that surrounds you. Decisions you don’t have if you can bypass the levels.

Thats what i was inferring with the SM and arkham comparison. Arkham forces u to think while SM u can just go thru the motions. SM proves that a lot of traversal games need players to choose to engage with mechanics for them to be compelling

I dont disagree that making pure flight truly engaging is easy, but its possible. The clip cleary has timed boosts. Forcing the player below the skyline makes them engage with mechanics to weave thru buildings, having to account for momentum, choosing when to speed or slow down

Also i should add iron man isn't superman. He's a rocket, momentum and speed (should) matter. They could make flying close to things reward u like how driving close to cars in saints row gives u xp. I bet theres an energy management mechanic between flight, armor, and weapons

Literally open world games like Palworld, Hogwarts Legacy, or even Infamous Second Son had full or some capability of flying. This is a non-issue. Spider Man's limitations with swinging is what made it fun, same with Batman, but this doesn't BREAK the game.

Idk why youd bring up the spiderman games as if they figured out its traversal system and how theyre basically 'endlessly fun' to do. People 100% get bored of webswinging in those games, even with all of the subconscious calculations you make while doing it.

Yes. No imagine that happening in five minutes instead of a few hours. That’s flying.

@TheChrisRayGun I’m gonna be real it kinda just sounds like you’re playing devils advocate It doesn’t matter if like 4 people find web swinging more repetitive than flight That’s not the point

@TheChrisRayGun

I disagree. This game had unlimited flight and was fun af.

It's alright to be wrong

The closest I've ever gotten to complete flight sandbox was saints row gat out of hells late game and then that required like diving to gain momentum, was fun as hell but the fun came from building speed without crashing

I know it’s not a superhero game, but flying in Hogwarts legacy was one of my favourite things to do

New frame from the Iron Man game just came out!

Then Ace Combat wouldn't be fun. A super hero game with flying is basically Prototype/hulk/Spiderman/Batman (depending on power level) but you can switch to Ace Combat gameplay at will.

But...they figured it out

I think flying doesn’t break superhero games, bad design does. Superman Returns had near-limitless flight systems: free-roam Metropolis, climb to the stratosphere, break the sound barrier, not heavy stamina choking etc and it was the best part of the entire game.

@ChrisRGun We have to stop with this silly echo chamber take, A flying super hero game is not impossible to make fun, I’m so tired of this non sense

What you're saying is so stupid

What a DEFEATIST mindset. "If it could be done, it would've been done by now". That's some dumb argument, that assumes that innovation is a linear line of progression, instead of the fusion between previously created elements that it is.

The problem with flying imo is that its too easy. Flying needs be a form of skill expression through harder inputs and even harder to do maneuvers. Getting from point a to b in the simplest way possible SHOULD be unrewarding.

People forget Superman 64

I think it doesn’t work in open world. But it could work in a game with linear levels with obstacles designed around you having unlimited flight.

You can fly in saint row 4

I think Superman could really work, mostly because it would take place in Metropolis. A semi futuristic, art deco city with scaffolding, bridges, and architecture to fly around, over, and through would force the player to engage with the world on a level similar to Spider-Man.

Turning radius. Like how a car cannot make an immediate 90° turn. Add in a small punishment for running into a building such as needing to correct yourself, slowing you down. Boom, flying in video games fixed.

I think it can be done to work well if the game world/level design is built around it, in an alien/fantasy sort of way. Modern human structual design only accounts for variation on the vertical axis when it feels it needs to, but having a game take place where there’s plenty to…

I see where he is coming from but I disagree. I suggest everyone try 9 days or undefeated. Two really good indie superhero type games with good flying mechanics. @UNDEFEATED_GAME is developing a second undefeated game that looks pretty sick too. Hype for that.
