Massacre of 201 Media Workers in Gaza: An Unprecedented Attack on Press Freedom Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza, 201 journalists have been killed, marking an unparalleled assault on press freedom in modern history. In addition to these killings, the Israeli military has prohibited foreign journalists from entering Gaza, effectively blocking external documentation of the ongoing atrocities. The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has held a vigil outside Downing Street for Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli forces since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023. The vigil followed the killing of Anas al-Sharif, one of Gaza’s most prominent reporters, alongside Mohammed Qreiqeh and three others, when Israeli forces targeted a tent sheltering journalists outside Al-Shifa Hospital. Each attendee at the vigil held the name of a journalist killed by Israel in Gaza. According to figures, at least 283 Palestinian journalists have been killed since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza.

It somehow finds no room for Israel, or the 250 journalists it has killed in Gaza. Committee to Protect Journalists’s own data shows why this is inexcusable: 2025 was the deadliest year for journalists on record, and Israel was responsible for two-thirds of all journalist deaths worldwide.
