Whenever the topic of offense comes up I'm always reminded of this from Steve Hughes. I was quite young when I first saw it and it's stuck with me since

Or putting it another way there is a right to free speech but not a right to never be offended

I had anxiety and depression for many years and Konstantin, you are correct. Life is unpredictable at the best of times. Environments vary, how cultures interact with each other vary. /1

This was a really nice conversation, he's very intelligent and his use of the socratic method was very compelling, you handled it really well too 🙂

“What really frightens and dismays us is not external events themselves, but the way in which we think about them. It is not things that disturb us, but our interpretation of their significance.” Epictetus & basic CBT.

Having had high rates of anxiety and depression in the past I understand why there's a felt need to 'protect' people from things that may make that worse for them but ultimately it harms more than helps when ppl walk on eggshells to accommodate such conditions in my experience.

Telling people to take personal responsibility and not blaming others will be of far greater benefit to them than pandering to their anxieties. I can't believe there is even an argument about this 🫤

I'dy use his own phrasing against him: "If you lack back human decency, compassion, and thoughtfulness to be mindfulness to take care in what you say to people, then that's not a them-problem - it's a you-problem."

This is key right now given the visceral response to KSI on the recent Sidemen video. Far too many people thinking they’re morally superior than the guy who non-maliciously made an offensive joke, all the while attempting to destroy his career and not accepting his apology.
