Why is it that Nigerian food is only considered appealing once it’s been shrunk, stripped of its soul, and plated with tweezers? In this video, I argue that we don’t have to dilute our cuisine to export it.

I know this person by face and not by name. But who ever you are, you will never suffer in life. Your head will continue to go higher (yoruba prayer). I got tired of this and most times end up eating at home or a canteen where I could eat like a proper Nigerian.

What the hell, what the hellion 😅

This is the thinking we should apply to everything From health to education to sports to science to religion and the whole economy

@davidsalt_ I tweeted recently about not wanting to see anymore chefs reinvent “Egusi” or “Ewa agoyin”. These are our foods, if you must create fine dining in Nigeria use those same ingredients & create something else. We are more relaxed & exposed now, no longer just eating to survive.

Nothing wrong with applying creativity to make food more visually appealing. Some would argue that the aesthetics is what give the food the soul which you say is being stripped. Ultimately, we are no longer in the colonial days, so let people go for what they prefer. Variety is the spice of life.

“The absolute disgrace that is deconstructed Amala”🤧

It’s called Nigerian food for a reason. Our portions and the look makes it Nija food. Totally agree with you, “let Nija food breathe” 😎

Nothing pains me more than that hemispherical spoon they use to serve rice at parties. Don't you get it, I either eat well or I don't eat at all. Don't serve me two hemispheres. I will have to go to a restaurant, to add another food which mostly leads to a disaster.

Please, only a handful of people are worried about this. The vast majority don’t and will never do fine dining of their local cuisine.

This is more of a business decision than anything else. The people in the business of exporting our food to international markets have to design the palate that appeals to that market.

God bless you for this. I’ve loved watching your videos when you bring people together to eat. But to hear you break this very important issue down warms my heart. Thank you once again.

I love your content. Please Can you do it with no alcohol showing? Like this one, why is a bottle there I see you do a lot of drinks and drinking. Don’t know if it’s intentional or not.

I love my Nigerian foods. In my several years in Canada, I have not eaten anything else other than Nigerian foods, except when I eat out, which is like once or twice a year. I will die on the hills of Nigerian foods. And I am not letting anyone’s opinion sway my palate.

You’re right

I completely agree with you ❤️ Also let’s learn to call our foods by their original names! Call it Akara,Egusi, moi moi, etc -It doesn’t make it local.Calling it bean cake or whatever western name doesn’t make it classy either! -Be your true self and own your Heritage with pride!

May your wisdom multiply. This is a nobrainer but some of our people don’t think much

Finally, someone had to say it! Thank you,Ama

Pure flavor and real story beat tweezer plating any day. Nigerian food deserves to be bold, loud, and unapologetic.

Who came up with this idea😂😂😂😂. Ori Eni yen ti gbaleeeeee

I agree. When we finally get it that they'll never change the way they see Africans including our foods, we'll stop trying to get them to "pick us" by dressing up or stripping away the "Africa" from our foods.

Take ya flowers 💐 Chef🎯

It all began like a joke when they started pairing fufu or amala with spoons. Like, why is there a sooon next to my oje’abacha ffs!? Where’s the bowl of water!???

M

Totally agree with you but no need for all the neocolonialism talk. Just wear the next chef that brings you this kind of rubbish food better 500. Him no go try am again 😭

I absolutely agree!

That’s why I like Black American x African fusion restaurants. It’s black on both sides and the atmosphere is always elevated but not European.

This needs to be hung in the Louvre

Awesome ... Adopting this perspective could also help us govern ourselves better and develop better Government policies.

You can use this insight in other areas, and you'll be correct, it will make you understand why our growth is limited as a result.

Neo-colonialism keee una😏 Africans should learn to take responsibility for their stupid actions. Your chefs wanted to stand their recipes out & wanted to make African cuisine intercontinental! Talmbout “Afrofusion”. Indians never did that na. Or “they didn’t tell them” too? 😏

amala was built for colonial extraction? wild...just like glits were made for slaves right? so there is no history before the colonialists? is this what the nigerian professional middle has been reduced to? you guys are retarded

Na this kind content u go expect from the feux food critic, Opeyemi.

please I want to be your friend this year so that you will call me for that your food party😭

I like my Oha and fufu any way it is presented.

@misss__audrey In the way we speak, the way we rename our foods to interest or to look appealing to foreigners, e.g Akara dat some rename as “beans cake, akpu now called pounded yam etc. also in the way we dress & in the way party/celebrate. We have inbuilt self esteem issues & less self worth
