He did not fail to read the room. He read the room but thought the repressive tactics he used in 1992 as a youth winger and part of YK92 would work in intimidating the young Kenyans. Even after killing some, throwing tantrums and sulking, deploying the military to intimidate the peaceful protesters, he realized that no army is stronger than a people who have decided to free themselves from the oppressor. The young people are determined to fix the broken government structure so it works for the majority of Kenyans and not the minority and friends of the President who are corrupt and loot public money.
