Why is “spousal maintenance” a thing?

spousal support is fine until the end of the divorce after that there is no reason for it.

This is spousal support only. Both have the same education. One is required to pay for everything, including both lawyers. While the other is not required to pull her own weight simply because of the fact she never did. Insanity.

We supported our spouses by caring for children and taking care of everything while they soley worked on their businesses or career. We have no one to do that for us when we find ourselves suddenly single.

I know a guy who married a very wealthy woman, they were married 28 years / 3 kids, and she asked him to give up everything to “invest for the family”, take care of the homes, the kids etc.. By the time they divorced he was into his 50’s and she didn’t want to settle for a dime as per the prenup. Zero. She found out the prenup did not stand at that point. He absolutely deserved spousal maintenance let alone a flat out settlement at that age. When you see it from far away, it looks one way but when you know the people, and the circumstances, it really makes sense for maintenance or a flat out settlement when you’re talking about that age and decades of life given to the marriage. You may think differently, if you are the one paying it, and I totally understand that..
